미치 매코넬 상원 공화당 대표가 28일 대표직에서 물러나겠다고 밝혔습니다.
Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell announced on the 28th that he would step down as leader.

매코넬 대표는 이날 상원에서 “지난주 82세가 됐다”며 상원 공화당 대표로서 이번 임기가 마지막이 될 것이라고 말했습니다.
"I turned 82 last week," McConnell told the Senate floor, adding that this would be his last term as Senate Republican leader.

매코넬 대표는 그러면서 이제 차세대 지도부가 필요한 시기라고 강조했습니다.
McConnell stressed that it is time for the next generation of leadership.

다만 오는 2027년 1월 만료되는 상원의원의 임기는 끝까지 이행할 계획이라고 덧붙였습니다.
However, he added that the senator's term, which expires in January 2027, is planned to be fulfilled by the end.

이날 매코넬 대표는 발언 도중 감정에 북받치는 모습을 보이기도 했습니다.
During his remarks, McConnell also appeared emotional.

켄터키주를 지역구로 하는 매코넬 의원은 지난 17년 가까이 상원 공화당 대표를 역임했습니다.
McConnell, whose district is Kentucky, has served as the Senate Republican leader for nearly 17 years.

매코넬 대표는 지난해 넘어져 뇌진탕 증상과 함께 갈비뼈가 골절돼 입원 치료를 받았으며, 지난해 두 차례나 공개 석상에서 말을 하다가 돌연 멈추고 수십 초 간 멍한 상태로 있는 모습을 보여 건강이상설이 제기됐었습니다.
McConnell fell last year and was hospitalized for concussion and fractured his ribs, and he stopped in public twice last year and was dazed for tens of seconds, raising concerns about his health.

당시 매코넬 대표는 2024년까지 대표 임기를 계속하겠다고 밝힌 바 있습니다.
At the time, McConnell said he would continue his term as a representative until 2024.
