미-중 과학기술협정 27일 만료…국무부 “협상 중” > 세계

미 국무부가 오늘(27일) 만료되는 중국과의 과학기술협정(STA)세부 내용을 협상 중이라고 밝혔습니다.
The U.S. State Department said it is negotiating details of the Science and Technology Agreement (STA) with China, which expires today (27th).

미 국무부 대변인은 이날 VOA에, 중국과 과학기술협정을 ‘수정·연장 및 보강’하는 세부 내용을 협상 중이라고 밝혔습니다.
A U.S. State Department spokesperson told VOA that they are negotiating with China on details of "modifying, extending and reinforcing" the science and technology agreement.

다만 현재로서는 미국의 구체적인 협상 입장이나, 협정 연장 여부에 대한 정보는 제공할 수 없다고 말했습니다.
However, he said he could not provide information on the specific U.S. negotiating position or whether to extend the agreement at this time.

미중 STA는 1979년 지미 카터 전 대통령과 덩샤오핑 중국 주석이 양국 수교를 맺으면서 체결됐습니다.
The US-China STA was signed in 1979 when former President Jimmy Carter and Chinese President Deng Xiaoping established diplomatic relations between the two countries.

발효 이후 약 5년마다 갱신됐고, 지난해 8월 만료 직전 바이든 행정부는 협정을 6개월 연장했습니다.
It has been renewed about every five years since it took effect, and just before it expired in August last year, the Biden administration extended the agreement by six months.

한편 작년 11월 발표된 미 ‘의회조사국 보고서(CRS)’는 이 협정에 따른 중국의 협력이 일관되지 않다고 지적한 바 있습니다.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Congressional Research Service Report (CRS) released in November last year pointed out that China's cooperation under the agreement is inconsistent.

그 예로 CRS는 2019년 우한 바이러스 연구소에서 미국이 자금을 지원한 연구를 포함해 코로나바이러스 연구에 대한 미국의 접근을 차단했다고 지적했습니다.
As an example, the CRS pointed out that it blocked U.S. access to coronavirus research, including one funded by the U.S. at a Wuhan virus lab in 2019.
