미, 태평양 국가 키리바시 중국 경찰 주둔에 “역내 긴장 고조 위험” > 세계

미국은 태평양 섬나라 키리바시에 중국 경찰이 배치된 데 대해 역내 긴장을 고조시킬 위험이 있다고 우려했습니다.
The U.S. fears the deployment of Chinese police to the Pacific island nation of Kiribati could raise tensions in the region.

미국 국무부 대변인은 26일 `로이터’ 통신에 미국은 “중국으로부터 보안군을 들여오는 것이 어떠한 태평양 섬나라에도 도움이 될 것이라고 믿지 않는다”고 밝혔습니다.
A U.S. State Department spokesman told Reuters on the 26th that the U.S. "does not believe that bringing in security forces from China will help any Pacific island nation."

그러면서, 오히려 “역내와 국제적 긴장에 기름을 부을 위험이 있다”고 말했습니다.
Instead, he said, "There is a risk of fueling internal and international tensions."

국무부 대변인은 또 중국과 태평양 섬나라들 간 안보협정과 안보 관련 사이버 협력이 이들 나라의 자치권에 미칠 잠재적 영향에 대해 우려하고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
A State Department spokesperson also said he was concerned about the potential impact of security agreements and security-related cyber cooperation between China and Pacific island nations on their autonomy.

키리바시는 하와이와 비교적 가까울 뿐아니라 350만㎢ 넘는 면적의 세계 최대 규모 배타적경제수역(EEZ)을 갖고 있어 전략지역으로 여겨지고 있다고 `로이터’ 통신은 전했습니다.
Kiribati is considered a strategic area not only relatively close to Hawaii but also has the world's largest exclusive economic zone (EEZ) with an area of more than 3.5 million square kilometers, Reuters reported.

중국은 최근 2차 세계대전 당시 키리바시의 칸톤섬에 설치됐던 미군 활주로 재건 계획을 발표했으며, 이에 미국은 대사관 개설과 항만시설 개선을 약속하는 등 양국 간 경쟁이 이어지고 있습니다.
China recently announced plans to rebuild a U.S. military runway on the Canton Island in Kiribati during World War II, which has led to competition between the two countries, with the U.S. promising to open embassies and improve port facilities.

한편 키리바시 경찰국장 대행은 중국 경찰이 현지에서 협력하고 있지만 키리바시에 중국 경찰서는 없다고 말했습니다.
Meanwhile, acting police commissioner Kiribati said Chinese police are cooperating locally but there is no Chinese police station in Kiribati.
