미국 정부가 유엔 인권이사회 복귀를 밝힌 가운데 유엔총회는 14일 미국 등 18개 후보국을 새 이사국으로 선출하기 위한 표결을 진행합니다.
With the U.S. government announcing its return to the U.N. Human Rights Council, the U.N. General Assembly will hold a vote on the 14th to elect 18 candidates, including the U.S., as new board members.

후보국에는 미국 외에 아르헨티나, 인도, 리투아니아, 카타르, 소말리아, 아랍에미리트(UAE), 카메룬, 에레트리아 등도 포함됐습니다.
In addition to the United States, candidates included Argentina, India, Lithuania, Qatar, Somalia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Cameroon, and Eretria.

미국은 전임 도널드 트럼프 행정부 시절인 2018년 당시 인권이사회가 우방인 이스라엘에 대해 편견과 반감을 갖고 있고 미국이 요구하는 개혁을 외면한다는 이유로 탈퇴했습니다.
The United States withdrew in 2018, during the full-time Donald Trump administration, on the grounds that the Human Rights Council had prejudice and antipathy against Israel, its ally, and turned a blind eye to the reforms demanded by the United States.

이번 표결은 어떤 후보국도 경쟁 없이 무난히 선출될 것으로 전망되는 가운데 일부 후보국은 자국의 인권 실적과 관련해 비판을 받고 있습니다.
While any candidate country is expected to be elected without competition, some candidate countries are criticized for their human rights performance.

국제 인권단체인 휴먼 라이츠 워치의 루이스 샤르본느 유엔국장은 “경쟁이 없는 올해 양상은 국제적 선거를 조롱거리로 만들고 있다”고 비판했습니다.
Lewis Charbonne, director of the United Nations at Human Rights Watch, an international human rights organization, criticized, "This year's aspect without competition is making fun of international elections."

샤르본느 국장은 “카메룬, 에레트리아, UAE와 같은 심각한 인권 유린국을 선출하는 움직임은 유엔 회원국들이 인권을 보호하기 위한 이사회의 근본적인 임무에 대해 진지하지 않다는 끔찍한 신호를 발신한다”고 말했습니다.
Director Sharbonne said, "The movement to elect serious human rights violators such as Cameroon, Eretria, and the UAE sends a terrible signal that UN member states are not serious about the board's fundamental mission to protect human rights."
