미국과 한국의 고위 외교당국자가 북한 문제와 북러 무기거래, 미한동맹 강화 등 양국 현안을 논의했습니다. 글로벌 과제를 해결하는 데 있어 미한일 3국 관계의 중요성도 강조했습다. 조상진 기자가 보도합니다.

미 국무부는 29일 커트 캠벨 부장관이미국을 방문 중인 조태열 한국 외교부 장관과 만났다고 전했습니다.
The U.S. State Department said on the 29th that Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell met with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yeol, who is visiting the U.S.

국무부는 이날 매튜 밀러 대변인 명의의 보도자료를 통해 양측은 “최근 북한의 공격적인 행동과 수사에 대해 논의했으며, 북한이 대화에 복귀할 것을 촉구했다”고 밝혔습니다.
The State Department said in a press release in the name of spokesman Matthew Miller that the two sides "discussed North Korea's recent aggressive actions and investigations, and urged North Korea to return to dialogue."

그러면서 “캠벨 부장관은 한국에 대한 미국의 변함없는 공약을 재확인하고, 인도태평양 지역과 그 너머의 평화와 안보, 번영의 핵심축으로서 미한동맹의 중요성을 강조했다”고 밝혔습니다.
"Secretary Campbell reaffirmed the United States' unwavering commitment to South Korea and emphasized the importance of the U.S.-Korea alliance as a key pillar of peace, security and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond," he said.

국무부는 또 양측이 “가장 어려운 글로벌 과제를 해결하는 데 있어 미한일 3국 관계의 중요성에 대해서도 논의했다”고 전했습니다.
The State Department also said the two sides "discussed the importance of the trilateral relationship between the U.S. and Japan in addressing the most difficult global challenges."

조태열 장관은 캠벨 부장관과의 회담에 앞서 28일에는 미국 상하원 외교위원회 소속 의원들과 면담을 갖고 북한 문제 등 역내 정세와 미한동맹, 미한일 협력 등에 대해 의견을 교환했습니다.
Prior to the meeting with Deputy Secretary Campbell, Minister Cho Tae-yeol met with members of the U.S. House and Senate Foreign Relations Committee on the 28th to exchange views on the situation in the region, including North Korea, the alliance between the U.S. and Korea, and cooperation between the U.S. and Japan.

한국 외교부에 따르면, 조 장관은 이날 공화당의 빌 해거티, 민주당 크리스 밴 홀런 상원의원과 각각 면담을 하고, 이후 숙소를 직접 방문한 마이클 맥콜 하원 외교위원장, 영 김 하원 외교위 인도태평양 소위원장 등과도 만났습니다.
According to the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Cho met with Republican Senator Bill Hagerty and Democrat Chris Van Hollan, respectively, and later with House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCall and House Foreign Affairs Committee Subcommittee Chairman Young Kim.

조 장관은 이 자리에서 미한동맹이 미국 의회의 초당적 지지 아래 외연과 깊이를 지속적으로 확장해 나갈 수 있도록 의원들의 관심과 지원을 당부했습니다.
At the meeting, Minister Cho called for the interest and support of lawmakers so that the U.S.-Korea alliance can continue to expand its scope and depth under the bipartisan support of the U.S. Congress.

또 경제 및 첨단기술 분야 협력이 미한 관계의 주요 축이라고 강조하고, 미국에 진출한 한국 기업들의 원활한 활동을 위해 의회 차원의 적극적인 지원을 요청했다고 밝혔습니다.
He also stressed that cooperation in the economic and high-tech sectors is a major pillar of the Korea-U.S. relationship, and said that he requested active support at the parliamentary level for the smooth activities of Korean companies entering the U.S.

이에 대해 의원들은 한목소리로 윤석열 대통령 취임 이후 미한 관계가 그 어느 때보다 견고하다고 평가하고, 미국 의회 내 미한동맹에 대한 초당적 지지 기반이 구축돼 있는 만큼, 미한동맹 70주년을 맞아 지속적인 성장과 발전을 위해 노력을 아끼지 않겠다고 말했다고 한국 외교부는 전했습니다.
In response, lawmakers said in unison that the U.S.-Korea relationship is stronger than ever since Yoon Suk Yeol took office, and that they will spare no effort for continued growth and development on the 70th anniversary of the U.S.-Korea alliance, as the foundation for bipartisan support for the U.S.-Korea alliance has been established.

지난 23일부터 29일까지 일정으로 미국을 방문한 조태열 한국 외교부 장관은 앞서 28일에는 토니 블링컨 국무장관과 만나 북한 문제를 비롯한 다양한 지역과 글로벌 도전에 대해 논의했으며, “불법적인 북러 군사 협력이 지역 안정과 국제 비확산 체제에 심각한 위협을 가한다”고 지적한 바 있습니다.
South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yeol, who visited the U.S. from the 23rd to the 29th, met with Secretary of State Tony Blinken on the 28th to discuss various regional and global challenges, including North Korean issues, and pointed out that "illegal military cooperation between North Korea and Russia poses a serious threat to regional stability and the international non-proliferation system."
