코로나 팬데믹 직전 북한을 탈출해 자유세계로 향하는 일가족 5명의 여정을 그린 다큐 영화가 세계적인 독립영화제 경쟁 부문에 진출했습니다. 생사의 갈림길에 있는 이들의 위험한 탈출 과정을 생생하게 전달하고 있다는 평가입니다. 김영권 기자가 보도합니다.
Just before the COVID-19 pandemic, a documentary film about the journey of five family members from North Korea to the free world entered the competition section of the global independent film festival. It is evaluated that it vividly conveys the dangerous escape process of those who are at the crossroads of life and death. Reporter Kim Young-kwon reports.

세계 독립영화계의 아카데미상으로 불리는 선댄스영화제 경쟁 부문에 탈북민 일가족의 탈출을 다룬 다큐영화 ‘유토피아를 넘어서(Beyond Utopia)’가 진출했습니다.
The documentary film Beyond Utopia, which deals with the escape of a family of North Korean defectors, entered the competition section of the Sundance Film Festival, which is called the Academy Award of the world's independent film industry.

선댄스영화제는 최근 홈페이지를 통해 매들린 개빈 감독이 제작한 이 영화를 올해 다큐멘터리 경쟁 부문에 공식 초청했다고 밝혔습니다.
The Sundance Film Festival recently announced on its website that it has officially invited the film, produced by director Madeleine Gavin, to this year's documentary competition.

이 작품은 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증 발생 직전인 2019년 북한을 탈출한 일가족 5명의 자유를 향한 험난한 여정과 이들을 돕는 한국 갈렙선교회 김성은 목사의 이야기를 담고 있습니다.
This work tells the story of Kim Sung-eun, a Korean Caleb missionary who helps five family members who escaped from North Korea in 2019, just before the outbreak of the novel coronavirus infection disease.

선댄스영화제는 이 영화에 대해 지구상에서 가장 억압적인 장소 중 한 곳을 낙원으로 믿고 자란 개개인의 자유를 향한 탈출을 긴장감 있는 시선으로 따라가고 있다고 소개했습니다.
The Sundance Film Festival introduced the film as a tense follow-up to the escape toward freedom of individuals who grew up believing one of the most repressive places on Earth as paradise.

그러면서 이 영화의 핵심에는 남겨두고 떠날 수밖에 없었던 자녀와의 재회를 위해 필사적인 어머니, 국경을 넘어 험준한 산으로 위험한 여정을 떠나는 어린아이들과 노령의 할머니 등 일가족 5명, 그리고 이런 절실한 영혼들을 돕는 사명을 가진 ‘신의 남자’가 있다고 설명했습니다.
At the heart of the film is a mother desperate for a reunion with her children who had no choice but to leave behind, five members of a family, including children and elderly grandmothers on a dangerous journey across the border, and "Man of God" with a mission to help these desperate souls.

He also praised the film, saying it vividly conveys the dangerous escape process of those who are at the crossroads of life and death, saying, "It provides an unforgettable experience."

이 영화를 제작한 개빈 감독은 아프리카 콩고민주공화국 내 성폭력 피해 여성 공동체의 치유와 회복 과정을 그린 넷플릭스 다큐영화 ‘기쁨의 도시(City of Joy)’로 여러 영화제에서 수상 경력이 있는 미국 독립영화계의 저명한 감독입니다.
Director Gavin is a prominent American independent film director who has won awards at several festivals for the Netflix documentary "City of Joy," which depicts the healing and recovery of female sexual violence-stricken communities in the Democratic Republic of Africa.

선댄스영화제 홈페이지에 따르면 미국 윌슨센터의 한반도 전문가인 수미 테리 아시아 국장이 이 영화의 프로듀서 중 한 명으로 참여했습니다.
According to the website of the Sundance Film Festival, Sumi Terry, director of Asia, a Korean Peninsula expert at the Wilson Center in the U.S., participated as one of the film's producers.

또 탈북민 출신 인권운동가이자 작가로 활동 중인 이현서 씨, 탈북민 구출을 지원하는 민간단체 링크(LiNK)의 하나 송 대표 등도 책임 프로듀서(executive producers)에 이름을 올렸습니다.
In addition, Lee Hyun-seo, a human rights activist and writer who was a North Korean defector, and Hana Song, CEO of LiNK, a private organization that supports the rescue of North Korean defectors, were also listed as executive producers.

이 영화 제작진은 9일 제작 동기 등에 관한 VOA의 질의에 선댄스영화제가 끝날 때까지 영화에 관해 언급하지 않을 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
The film crew said on the 9th that it will not comment on the film until the end of the Sundance Film Festival in response to VOA's questions about the motivation for production.

제작진은 구체적인 이유를 설명하지 않았지만 이번 영화에 대해 잘 아는 한 관계자는 이날 VOA에 “소니픽처스가 과거 김정은 암살을 다룬 영화를 배급해 북한의 해킹 공격을 받은 것과 같은 불상사를 피하려는 것”이라고 말했습니다.
The production team did not explain the specific reason, but an official familiar with the film told VOA, "Sony Pictures is trying to avoid mishaps such as North Korea's hacking attack by distributing movies about the assassination of Kim Jong-un in the past."

“김여정을 비롯해 북한 지도부가 탈북민을 인간쓰레기라고 격렬하게 비난했기 때문에 조심스러워한다”는 것입니다.
"Kim Yo-jung and other North Korean leadership are cautious because they vehemently criticized North Korean defectors as human waste."

이 다큐영화에서 탈북민들을 돕는 주인공으로 출연한 갈렙선교회의 김성은 목사는 이와 관련해 VOA에 영화 제작진이 북한 정권의 테러 등을 많이 우려하는 것 같다고 말했습니다.
Pastor Kim Sung-eun of the Caleb Mission, who starred as the main character helping North Korean defectors in the documentary film, told VOA that the film production team seemed to be very concerned about the North Korean regime's terrorism.

[녹취: 김성은 목사] “테러를 당할까 봐 굉장히 걱정하더라고요. 그것을 보면서 사실 제가 더 아이러니하더라고요. 왜냐하면 열정을 갖고 이것을 만들어 보자고 했던 사람들이 더 무서워하는 모습을 보면서 참 북한의 영향력이 대단하다. 저는 오히려 무덤덤하고 담담한데…제가 정상이 아닌가 하는 생각이 자꾸 들더라고요.”
[Recording: Pastor Kim Sung-eun] "I was very worried about being terrorized." I was more ironic when I saw that. This is because North Korea's influence is great as people who wanted to make this with passion are more scared. I'm rather calm and calm...I keep thinking that I'm not normal."

김 목사는 그러면서 김정은·김여정 남매의 협박이 영향을 주는 것 같아 씁쓸했다고 말했습니다.
Pastor Kim said he was bitter because the threats from Kim Jong-un and Kim Yo-jung's siblings seemed to affect him.

한편 김 목사는 영화에 등장하는 일가족 5명은 코로나 팬데믹 직전인 2019년 11월에 북한을 탈출한 뒤 중국과 제3국을 거쳐 12월 말에 한국에 안전하게 도착했다고 설명했습니다.
Meanwhile, Pastor Kim explained that the five members of the family in the film escaped from North Korea in November 2019, just before the COVID-19 pandemic, and arrived safely in South Korea at the end of December via China and a third country.

그러면서 6·25 전쟁을 겪은 80대 노모와 딸 부부, 김정은 체제에서 자란 손녀 2명 등이 중국과 동남아의 두 나라를 거치면서 느끼는 다양한 감정들이 영상에 담겨 있다고 전했습니다.
In the meantime, the video shows various emotions felt by an old mother in her 80s, a daughter couple, and two granddaughters who grew up under the Kim Jong-un regime through two countries in China and Southeast Asia.

이 다큐영화는 중개인과 탈북민 가족이 두만강을 건널 때부터 휴대전화로 촬영되기 시작했고, 중국에서는 갈렙선교회 관계자, 그리고 동남아시아 국가들에서는 개빈 감독과 제작팀이 합류해 김 목사의 지원으로 한국까지 가는 과정을 촬영한 것으로 알려졌습니다.
The documentary film began to be filmed on mobile phones when intermediaries and families of North Korean defectors crossed the Tumen River, and Caleb mission officials from China and Gavin and production teams from Southeast Asian countries joined to film the process to Korea with Pastor Kim's support.

김 목사는 “탈북민들이 자유를 위해 감내하고 겪어야 하는 부담이 얼마나 큰 지를 세상에 알리고 싶어 다큐영화에 출연하게 됐다”고 말했습니다.
Pastor Kim said, "I came to appear in a documentary film because I wanted to let the world know how much burden North Korean defectors have to endure and suffer for freedom."

[녹취: 김성은 목사] “우리 탈북민들의 아픔과 그들의 인권에 관해 세상에 더 알리고 싶었어요. 무엇보다 이 다큐에 출연하게 된 것은 제가 목사이니까 이것을 통해 기독교인들이 어떤 역할을 하는지, 정말 가난하고 헐벗고 죽어가는 사람들에게 어떤 일을 하는지 알리고 싶었어요. 최근 기독교가 욕을 많이 먹지만 그래도 이것이 우리의 사명이기도 하니까요.”
[Recording: Pastor Kim Sung-eun] "I wanted to let the world know more about the pain of our North Korean defectors and their human rights." Most of all, I wanted to tell you what Christians do and what they do to the poor and dying through this because I'm a pastor. Christianity has been criticized a lot lately, but this is still our mission."

24년째 탈북민 구출 활동을 하고 있는 김 목사는 “코로나 여파로 탈북민이 급감하면서 관심도 크게 줄었다”며 “이 영화를 계기로 중국 내 탈북민들이 신속하게 자유 세계로 가도록 많은 관심을 가져주셨으면 좋겠다”고 당부했습니다.
Pastor Kim, who has been rescuing North Korean defectors for 24 years, said, "As the number of North Korean defectors plunged in the aftermath of COVID-19, interest has decreased significantly," adding, "I hope you will pay a lot of attention to North Korean defectors in China to quickly go to the free world."

선댄스영화제는 오는 19일 미국 서부 유타주 파크시티에서 개막해 29일까지 열립니다.
The Sundance Film Festival will open in Park City, Utah, western United States on the 19th and run until the 29th.

영화 ‘유토피아를 넘어서’는 21일부터 총 5차례 상영하고 현지 시각으로 24일에는 온라인으로도 상영될 예정입니다.
The movie "Beyond Utopia" will be screened five times from the 21st and will also be screened online on the 24th local time.
