백악관 “바이든 취임 후 한국 대미투자 556억 달러”…전문가 “동등한 파트너로 격상” > 경제

바이든 행정부 들어 한국의 대미 투자가 크게 늘었다고 백악관이 밝혔습니다. 전문가들은 양국 관계가 동등한 파트너로 격상하고 있음을 보여준다고 평가합니다. 안소영 기자가 보도합니다.
South Korea's investment in the U.S. has increased significantly under the Biden administration, the White House says. Experts say that it shows that the relationship between the two countries is being upgraded to an equal partner. Reporter Ahn So-young reports.

바이든 행정부 출범 이후 한국의 대미 투자 규모가 556억 달러에 달하는 것으로 나타났습니다.
Since the inauguration of the Biden administration, South Korea's investment in the U.S. has reached $55.6 billion.

미국 백악관은 16일 설명자료를 내고 “미국 제조업에 대한 해외 직접 투자가 (신종 코로나바이러스) 팬데믹 이전 수준에 비해 매년 두 배씩 증가했다”고 밝혔습니다.
The White House released an explanatory release on the 16th, saying, "Foreign direct investment in U.S. manufacturing has doubled every year compared to pre-pandemic levels."

백악관은 구체적으로 삼성 디스플레이가 텍사스주에 새로운 반도체 공장 건설을 위해 170억 달러를 투자하고, 미국에 전기 자동차 베터리 공장을 건설하기 위해 파트너들과 함께 120억 달러 이상을 투자했다며 이를 통해 일자리 수천 개를 창출했다고 설명했습니다.
The White House specifically explained that Samsung Display has invested $17 billion to build a new semiconductor plant in Texas and more than $12 billion with partners to build an electric vehicle battery plant in the United States, creating thousands of jobs.

또한 한국의 에너지 솔루션 공급업체인 한화큐셀이 조지아주의 공장 확장을 위해 25억 달러, 한국 풍력 타워 제조업체 씨에스윈드가 콜로라도 풍력 타워 제조 시설에 2억여 달러를 투자했다고 언급했습니다.
It also noted that Hanwha Q Cells, a South Korean energy solutions supplier, has invested $2.5 billion to expand its plant in Georgia, and Korean wind tower maker CS Wind has invested more than $200 million in a Colorado wind tower manufacturing facility.

LG Chem then said it had invested $3.2 billion in an electric vehicle battery plant in Clarksville, Tennessee, which would allow it to aim to produce enough battery materials to power 1.2 million electric vehicles annually.

이와 함께 LG 에너지 솔류션도 애리조나주 퀸 크릭에 있는 전기차 배터리 생산 공장에 56억 달러, 미시간주 홀란드 공장에 30억 달러 투자를 발표했으며, 이에 따라 각각 신규 일자리 2천 800 개와 1천 200 개가 창출될 것으로 기대한다고 백악관은 전했습니다.
At the same time, LG Energy Solutions also announced a $5.6 billion investment in its electric vehicle battery production plant in Queen Creek, Arizona, and a $3 billion investment in its Holland, Michigan plant, according to the White House, which expects to create 2,800 and 1,200 new jobs, respectively.

In addition, SK Hynix promised to invest $15 billion in the semiconductor industry, adding that U.N. Bio, a Korean pharmaceutical company specializing in diabetes treatment, will invest $100 million to build an insulin production and manufacturing facility in Morgan Town, West Virginia.

The total amount of investment by Korean companies in the U.S. is $55.6 billion, which is more than a quarter of the $200 billion in private investment attracted by Asia-Pacific companies, as stated by the White House.

태미 오버비 전 주한미국상공회의소 대표는 17일 VOA와의 통화에서 한국의 이 같은 대미 투자 규모는 미국과 한국이 동등한 파트너 관계로 격상되는 과정을 보여주는 것으로 분석했습니다.
In a telephone interview with VOA on the 17th, Tammy Oberby, former head of the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea, analyzed that Korea's investment in the U.S. shows the process of upgrading the U.S. and South Korea to an equal partnership.

Oberby, who served as chairman of the Foreign Investment Council (CFIUS), a foreign investment research committee under the U.S. Treasury Department, said Korea's investment in electric vehicle batteries and solar energy will further deepen and develop bilateral economic relations.

워싱턴의 민간단체인 한미경제연구소(KEI)의 톰 라마지 정책연구원은 이날 VOA에 한국의 대미 투자 확대는 미국뿐 아니라 한국에도 도움이 된다며, 이 같은 추세가 계속될 것이라고 전망했습니다.
Tom Ramage, a policy researcher at the Korea-U.S. Economic Research Institute (KEI), a private organization in Washington, told VOA that Korea's expansion of investment in the U.S. will not only help the U.S. but also Korea, and predicted that the trend will continue.

[라마지 정책연구원] “Korean companies are leaders in industries like solar technology, memory chip manufacturing, and electric vehicle batteries. Investing in the United States allows them to take advantage of joint ventures with American companies where they can benefit from complementary management structures and knowledge of the domestic consumer landscape while expanding market access for Korean companies.”

"Korean companies are leaders in solar technology, memory chip manufacturing, and electric vehicle batteries," said Ramaji, a policy researcher. "Through U.S. investment, we can expand Korean companies' market access while utilizing our mutually complementary management structure and knowledge of the domestic consumer environment."

그러면서 “한국은 중국과 같은 나라들에 대한 의존도를 낮추고 공급망을 정치적 또는 경제적 동맹국으로 옮기는 ‘프렌드쇼어링’의 중요성을 이해하고 있다”고 덧붙였습니다.
"South Korea understands the importance of 'friendshoring' that reduces dependence on countries like China and moves supply chains to political or economic allies," he added.
