미 법무부는 21일 동남아에서 핵물질을 밀매하려던 일본 야쿠자 두목 에비사와 다케시가 밀매업자로 위장한 미국 마약단속국(DEA) 요원에게 체포됐다고 밝혔습니다.

그러면서 미국 핵 법의학 연구소 분석 결과, 에비사와가 가지고 있던 샘플에 우라늄과 무기급 플루토늄이 포함돼 있다고 확인했습니다.
According to the analysis of the U.S. Nuclear Forensic Research Institute, Ebisawa's sample contained uranium and weapons-grade plutonium.

매튜 올슨 법무부 국가안보 담당 차관보는 피고가 미얀마에서 외국에 무기급 핵물질을 판매하고 무장 반군 조직을 대신해 군사 무기를 구입하려고 공모한 혐의가 있다고 밝혔습니다.
Matthew Olson, the Justice Department's deputy national security secretary, said the defendant was accused of conspiring to sell weapons-grade nuclear materials to foreign countries in Myanmar and buy military weapons on behalf of armed rebel groups.

기소장에는 "에비사와의 범죄 활동에는 대규모 마약과 무기 밀매가 포함돼 있으며, 그의 국제 범죄망은 아시아, 유럽, 미국 등지로 뻗어 있다"고 명시됐습니다.
"Ebisawa's criminal activities include large-scale drug and arms trafficking, and his international criminal network extends to Asia, Europe and the United States," the indictment said.

올슨 차관보는 “이런 활동이 성공했을 때 어떤 결과가 초래될 지 상상하는 것은 오싹한 일”이라며, 법무부는 이런 물질을 밀매하고 국가 안보와 국제 안정을 위협하는 사람들에게 책임을 물을 것이라고 강조했습니다.
"It's chilling to imagine the consequences of these activities being successful," Olson said, stressing that the Justice Department would hold those who trafficked these substances and threaten national security and international stability accountable.
