한일 미국대사관, ‘비욘드 유토피아’ 통해 북한 인권 참상 알려 > 사회

미국 정부가 탈북민들의 필사적인 탈출을 그린 다큐 영화를 통해 북한의 인권 참상을 계속 고발하고 있습니다. 한국과 일본 주재 미국 대사관은 최근 이 영화의 현지 상영에 맞춰 국무부가 제작한 탈북민 동영상을 공개했습니다. 김영권 기자가 보도합니다.
The U.S. government continues to accuse North Korea of human rights abuses through documentary films depicting the desperate escape of North Korean defectors. The U.S. embassies in South Korea and Japan recently released a video clip of North Korean defectors produced by the State Department in time for the film's local screening. Reporter Kim Young-kwon reports.

주일 미국대사관은 28일 인터넷 사회관계망서비스에 탈북 과정을 다룬 다큐 영화 ‘비욘드 유토피아’의 일본 내 상영 소식을 알리면서 미국에 거주하는 탈북민과의 인터뷰 영상을 게재했습니다.
The U.S. Embassy in Japan posted a video of an interview with a North Korean defector living in the United States on the 28th, announcing the screening of the documentary film "Beyond Utopia," about the North Korean defector process, on the Internet social network service.

대사관은 “탈북민 김두현 씨가 잔혹한 북한 정권 아래서 청년기를 보낸 후 북한을 탈출한 경험을 공유한다”며 그가 ‘비욘드 유토피아’를 본 소감과 바람을 전했습니다.
The embassy said, "We share the experience of North Korean defector Kim Doo-hyun escaping from North Korea after spending his youth under the brutal North Korean regime," expressing his feelings and wishes of seeing "Beyond Utopia."

그러면서 “그는 청중들이 핵무기 위협에 맞췄던 초점을 김정은 독재 치하에서 상상할 수 없는 삶을 살고 있는 2천500만 북한 주민들에 대한 연민으로 옮기길 바라고 있다”고 밝혔습니다.
"He wants the audience to shift the focus on the nuclear threat to compassion for the 25 million North Koreans living unimaginable lives under Kim Jong-un's dictatorship," he said.

김 씨는 동영상에서 “요즘 사람들은 북한에 대해 들으면 김정은과 핵무기를 떠올린다”며 “하지만 사람들은 쉽게 잊어버린다. 북한에는 전체주의와 독재 체제 아래 2천5백만 명의 주민이 살고 있다. 그들의 삶은 상상할 수 없을 정도”라고 말했습니다.
"Nowadays, people think of Kim Jong-un and nuclear weapons when they hear about North Korea," Kim said in a video. "But people easily forget. North Korea has 25 million residents under totalitarian and dictatorship. Their lives are unimaginable."

이어 영화를 보면서 자신의 과거 경험이 떠올랐다며 “북한 주민들을 위해 일하는 것은 그들의 고통을 알기 때문에 나에게 매우 중요하다”고 덧붙였습니다.
He added, "Working for North Koreans is very important to me because I know their pain."

김 씨의 동영상은 국무부가 지난달 워싱턴 D.C. 청사에서 탈북민의 필사적인 탈출을 그린 다큐 영화 ‘비욘드 유토피아’ 상영회를 개최한 후 제작했습니다.
Kim's video was produced after the State Department held a screening of Beyond Utopia, a documentary film about North Korean defectors' desperate escape, at the Washington, D.C., building last month.

당시 우즈라 제야 국무부 민간 안보·민주주의·인권 담당 차관은 축사를 통해 북한의 인권 상황이 지난 10년 동안 더욱 악화했다며 “우리는 아무것도 하지 않고 가만히 앉아있을 수는 없다. 우리는 북한 주민들의 삶을 개선하기 위해 행동해야 한다”고 강조했습니다.
In his congratulatory speech, Uzra Zeya, the deputy secretary of state for civil security, democracy and human rights, said that the human rights situation in North Korea has worsened over the past decade. "We cannot sit idly by doing nothing. We must act to improve the lives of North Koreans."

이후 한국과 일본 주재 미국 대사관이 ‘비욘드 유토피아’의 현지 상영에 맞춰 이 영화를 직접 소개하며 힘을 싣고 있습니다.
Since then, the U.S. embassies in Korea and Japan have been introducing the film in person to coincide with the local screening of Beyond Utopia.

앞서 서울의 미국 대사관은 지난 1월 ‘비욘드 유토피아’가 한국에서 개봉하자 인터넷 사회관계망 서비스에 관련 소식을 전하며 김두현 씨 동영상을 게재한 바 있습니다.
Earlier in January, when Beyond Utopia was released in Korea, the U.S. Embassy in Seoul posted a video of Kim Doo-hyun on the Internet social network service.

주일 미국대사관도 28일 김 씨 동영상을 올리면서 2월 말부터 3월 14일까지 도쿄 신주쿠의 극장가에서 ‘비욘드 유토피아’가 상영되는 소식을 소개하는 사이트를 링크했습니다.
The U.S. Embassy in Japan also posted Kim's video on the 28th, linking to a site introducing the news of "Beyond Utopia" being screened in a theater district in Shinjuku, Tokyo, from late February to March 14.

두 탈북민 가족의 엇갈린 운명을 생생하게 담은 이 영화는 지난해 선댄스 영화제 관객상, 올해 아카데미상 다큐 부분 예비 후보에 오르는 등 큰 주목을 받았습니다.
The film, which vividly depicts the mixed fate of two North Korean defector families, received great attention, including a preliminary nomination for last year's Sundance Film Festival Audience Award and this year's Academy Award for Documentary.

국무부가 동영상을 통해 소개한 김두현 씨는 북한 신의주 출신으로 지난 2009년 탈북한 뒤 한국을 거쳐 2015년 미국에 입국해 대학에서 국제관계학을 공부한 후 인권 운동가로 활동하고 있습니다.
Kim Doo-hyun, who was introduced by the State Department through a video, is from Sinuiju, North Korea, defected in 2009 and entered the U.S. in 2015 through South Korea, studying international relations at university, and is a human rights activist.

특히 지난해에는 탈북 경험을 담은 저서 ‘필요한 거짓말: 자유와 사랑을 위한 탈출(A Necessary Lie: Escape for Freedom and Love)’을 영문으로 펴내고 미국의 민간 단체인 북한인권위원회 자문위원으로도 활동하고 있습니다.
In particular, last year, he published his book "A Necessary Lie: Escape for Freedom and Love" in English, and is also an advisor to the North Korean Human Rights Commission, a private organization in the United States.

줄리 터너 국무부 북한인권특사는 최근 VOA와의 인터뷰에서 “탈북민들은 북한 주민들이 자유롭고 개방적인 인권 존중 사회에서 무엇을 성취할 수 있는지에 대한 살아있는 증거”라며 탈북민들에 대한 지원과 협력을 강화할 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
Julie Turner, the State Department's special envoy for North Korean human rights, told VOA in a recent interview that North Koreans are living proof of what they can achieve in a free and open respectful society for human rights and will strengthen support and cooperation for them.
