미 북한인권특사 “올해가 북한 인권 강조 적기…한국과 협력” > 사회

한국을 방문 중인 줄리 터너 미 국무부 북한인권특사가 오늘(21일) 서울 외교부 청사에서 전영희 외교부 평화외교기획단장을 만나 북한 인권 증진을 위한 협력 방안을 논의했습니다.
Julie Turner, the U.S. Special Envoy for North Korean Human Rights, met with Jeon Young-hee, head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Peace and Diplomacy Planning Department, at the Seoul Foreign Ministry building today (21st) to discuss ways to cooperate to promote North Korean human rights.

외교부에 따르면 터너 특사는 이 자리에서 올해를 북한 인권 문제 강조의 적기로 본다며 미한 간 관련 협력을 계속하자고 말했습니다.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Turner said at the meeting that he sees this year as the right time to emphasize North Korean human rights issues and that he should continue related cooperation between the U.S. and South Korea.

올해는 유엔 북한인권 조사위원회(COI) 보고서 공개 10주년이자 미국이 북한인권특사직을 설치한 지 20주년이고, 북한은 11월에 유엔의 보편적 인권 정례검토(UPR)를 받을 예정입니다.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the release of the U.N. Commission of Inquiry (COI) report and the 20th anniversary of the U.S. establishment of the special envoy for North Korean human rights, and North Korea is scheduled to receive the U.N.'s Universal Human Rights Review (UPR) in November.

전 단장도 터너 특사가 COI 보고서 10주년을 즈음해 방한하면서 북한 인권에 대한 관심이 다시 높아졌다며, 북한 인권을 국제사회에 알리는 노력뿐만 아니라 외부의 실상을 북한 내부에 전달하는 노력도 중요하다고 말했습니다.
As Turner visited South Korea on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the COI report, interest in North Korea's human rights has risen again, and it is important not only to promote North Korea's human rights to the international community, but also to communicate the reality of the outside world to the North.

양측은 이와 함께 지난해 6년만에 재개된 미한 북한인권협의체의 올해 상반기 개최를 추진키로 했습니다.
In addition, the two sides agreed to hold the first meeting of the U.S.-Korea North Korean Human Rights Council in the first half of this year, which resumed for the first time in six years last year.
