한국계 해나 김, 미 보건후생성 부차관보 임명…“바이든 다양성 증진의 증거” > 사회

미국에서 한국전쟁 참전용사들을 기리는 일에 앞장섰던 한국계 해나 김 씨가 미 보건후생부 부차관보로 임명됐습니다. 해나 김 부차관보는 바이든 정부가 미국의 다양성을 증진하고 있다는 증거라고 말했습니다. 박형주 기자가 보도합니다.
Hannah Kim, a Korean-American who took the lead in honoring Korean War veterans in the United States, has been appointed as deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Welfare. 미국에서 한국전쟁 참전용사 기념단체를 이끌었던 한국계 여성 해나 김(Hannah Kim) 씨가 미 연방 보건후생부(HHS) 부차관보로 발탁됐습니다.
Hannah Kim, a Korean-American woman who led the Korean War Veterans Memorial Group in the U.S., has been selected as Deputy Secretary of Health and Welfare (HHS).

19일부터 공식 업무를 시작한 김 부차관보는 보건후생부 보건서비스 분야의 공보담당 부차관보로서 미국보건의료연구소(AHRQ), 소비자정보·보험감독센터(CCIIO), 메디케어와 메디케이드 서비스센터(CMS), 보건자원서비스부(HRSA) 등 산하기관의 공보 업무를 총괄하게 됩니다.
Deputy Secretary of State Kim, who started his official duties on the 19th, will oversee the public affairs of affiliated agencies such as the U.S. Institute of Health and Welfare (AHRQ), Consumer Information and Insurance Supervision Center (CCIIO), Medicare and Medicaid Service Center (HRSA).

해나 김 부차관보는 21일 VOA와의 전화통화에서, “모든 미국인의 삶을 개선한다는 비전을 가진 바이든 행정부에서 일하게 돼 영광"이라며, 자신의 임명은 "바이든 대통령이 미국의 다양성을 증진하고 있다는 증거”라고 소감을 밝혔습니다.
"It's an honor to work for the Biden administration, which has a vision of improving the lives of all Americans," Deputy Secretary Hannah Kim told VOA on the 21st. "His appointment is proof that President Biden is promoting diversity in the United States."

또 자신의 이번 발탁이 “정말 열심히 노력한다면 배경과 상관없이 큰 역할을 맡고 봉사할 기회를 얻을 수 있는 나라에 우리가 살고 있다는 증거가 될 수 있기를 희망한다”고 말했습니다.
He also said, "I hope that if we work really hard, we can be proof that we live in a country where we can take a big role and serve regardless of the background."

올해 38세인 김 부차관보는 서울에서 태어나 6세 때 서부 캘리포니아주로 이민 온 한국계 1.5세입니다.
Kim, who is 38 years old this year, is a 1.5-year-old Korean-American who was born in Seoul and immigrated to Western California at the age of 6.

캘리포니아주에서 초·중·고교를 마친 뒤 한국 서울대학교에서 영문학을 공부했고 이후 조지 워싱턴대학에서 정치경영학 석사학위를 받았습니다.
After finishing elementary, middle, and high school in California, he studied English literature at Seoul National University in Korea and later received a master's degree in political management from George Washington University.

지난 2020년 미국 대통령 선거 때는 조 바이든 민주당 후보 캠프에서 아시아·태평양계(AAPI) 커뮤니티 담당 공보국장으로 일했습니다.
During the 2020 U.S. presidential election, he served as a public information director for the Asia-Pacific community at the Democratic candidate camp for Joe Biden.

이보다 앞서 2010~2016년에는 한국전 참전용사이자 대표적인 친한파 의원이었던 찰스 랭겔 전 하원의원의 보좌관을 지냈습니다.
Earlier in 2010-2016 he served as an aide to former Rep. Charles Rangel, a former Korean War veteran and representative close-knit lawmaker.

김 부차관보는 한국전쟁 참전용사를 기리는 활동에 적극 참여한 것으로 잘 알려져 있습니다.
Deputy Minister Kim is well-known for his active participation in honoring Korean War veterans.

2007년 젊은 한인들을 모아 한국전 정전협정 체결일인 7월 27일을 딴 ‘리멤버 727’을 만들어 한국전 희생자 추모와 평화 기원 문화제 등을 매년 개최해왔습니다.
In 2007, young Koreans gathered together to create "Remember 727," which was set on July 27, the day of the signing of the Korean War Armistice Agreement, and held a cultural festival to commemorate the victims of the Korean War and pray for peace.

또 2009년에는 미 연방정부의 '한국전 참전용사의 날' 제정을 위한 청원에 앞장섰으며, 그 인연으로 랭겔 의원의 보좌관으로 일하게 됐습니다.
In 2009, he led the U.S. federal government's petition to enact "Korean War Veterans' Day," which led him to serve as an aide to Rep. Rangel.

2017년과 2018년에는 세계 20여 개국과 미 전역을 돌며 한국전 참전용사를 만나는 프로젝트를 진행했습니다.

해나 김 씨는 당시 VOA와의 인터뷰에서 자유와 평화를 위해 한국전에 참전했던 이들에게 감사를 표하고, 이들의 이야기를 후세에 남기기 위한 취지라고 말했습니다.
Hannah Kim said in an interview with VOA at the time that she thanked those who fought in the Korean War for freedom and peace and that it was intended to leave their stories to posterity.

김 씨는 캐나다와 에티오피아, 콜롬비아 등 총 26개국을 방문해 참전용사 200여 명을 만났고, 이들의 사진과 이야기를 모아 한국 등에서 전시회를 열었습니다.
Kim visited a total of 26 countries, including Canada, Ethiopia, and Colombia, to meet more than 200 veterans, and gathered their photos and stories to hold exhibitions in Korea and other countries.

또 지난 5월에는 문재인 한국 대통령이 참석한 워싱턴 DC 한국전쟁 기념공원 ‘추모의 벽’ 착공식에서 진행을 맡기도 했습니다.

김 씨가 대표로 있는 ‘리멤버 727’은 현재 ‘추모의 벽’ 건설을 위한 기금 마련에 적극 나서고 있습니다.

해나 김 부차관보는 VOA에, 이 같은 활동은 “더 큰 맥락에서 미국을 배울 수 있는 기회”였다면서 한국전쟁 참전용사들을 기억하는 일은 자신이 “평생 헌신할 사명”이라고 말했습니다.
Deputy Secretary of State Hannah Kim told VOA that such activities were "an opportunity to learn America in a bigger context" and that remembering Korean War veterans is "a mission to devote oneself to life."
