미한외교장관 회담…블링컨 “미한 협력 어느 때보다 강력” > 정치

미국과 한국 외교장관이 워싱턴에서 만나 북한 문제 등 다양한 양자 현안을 논의했습니다. 미 국무장관은 두 나라가 세계의 거의 모든 주요 도전에 맞서 공조하는 등 미한 협력이 어느 때보다 강력하다고 강조했습니다. 조은정 기자가 보도합니다.
The U.S. and South Korean foreign ministers met in Washington to discuss various bilateral issues, including North Korea. The U.S. secretary of state stressed that the cooperation between the two countries is stronger than ever, with the two countries cooperating against almost all major challenges in the world. 토니 블링컨 미 국무장관과 한국의 조태열 외교장관이 28일 워싱턴 국무부 청사에서 만났습니다.
U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken and South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yeol met at the State Department building in Washington on the 28th.

지난 1월 조 장관이 취임한 이후 두 장관이 직접 만나 양자 회담을 한 것은 이번이 처음입니다.
This is the first time to meet the two ministers after his inauguration in January, since the Minister Cho was inaugurated.

블링컨 장관은 이날 회담 모두 발언에서 “한국과 미국의 협력관계는 그 어느 때보다 강력하다”며 “양자 차원과 지역 차원, 국제 차원에서 모두 그렇다”고 평가했습니다.
"South Korea's cooperative relationship with the United States is stronger than ever," Secretary Blinken said in remarks at all of the talks. "At both the bilateral, regional and international levels."

[녹취: 블링컨 장관] “Korea and the United States, our partnership is stronger than it’s ever been. And I can say that on a bilateral basis, on a regional basis, on a global basis. And that’s largely because of the extraordinary leadership that Korea shows in all three areas, something that the United States is grateful for. We’re working together on virtually every major challenge that we have to contend with around the world, as well as working together to build even greater opportunities for our people here in the United States and in South Korea.”

블링컨 장관은 한국이 차기 민주주의 정상회의를 개최하기로 한 데 대해 감사의 뜻을 표하면서, 자신이 직접 한국에서 참여하게 돼 기대가 크다고 말했습니다.
Minister Blinken thanked South Korea for its decision to hold the next Democratic Summit, saying he is looking forward to participating in the event himself.

조태열 장관은 이날 모두 발언에서 미한 동맹이 더욱 심화되고 강력해졌으며, 특히 동맹 70주년이었던 지난해 윤석열 대통령의 방미로 정점을 찍었다고 평가했습니다.
Minister Cho Tae-yeol said in his remarks that the alliance between the U.S. and South Korea has deepened and become stronger, culminating in President Yoon Suk Yeol's visit to the U.S. last year, the 70th anniversary of the alliance.

그러면서 올해는 동맹 역사에서 새로운 한 해가 시작되는 해이며, 동맹이 지속적으로 새로운 차원으로 성장하고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
This year marks the beginning of a new year in the history of the alliance, and the alliance continues to grow to a new level.

또 바이든 대통령과 윤석열 대통령이 다섯 차례의 성공적인 회담을 통해 미한동맹을 글로벌 포괄적 전략동맹으로 확대하고 강화해 나가겠다는 의지를 재확인했다고 밝혔습니다.
It also said that President Biden and President Yoon Suk Yeol reaffirmed their commitment to expanding and strengthening the U.S.-Korea alliance into a global comprehensive strategic alliance through five successful meetings.

조 장관은 미국과 한국이 도전에 공동으로 대응하고 있다며 북한을 언급했습니다.
Minister Cho mentioned North Korea, saying the U.S. and South Korea are jointly responding to the challenge.

We continue to stand together in supporting Ukraine, and we are united in condemning Houthi attacks and work together to uphold navigational rights and freedom in the Gulf of Aden.”

조 장관은 “우리는 러시아로 군수품과 탄도미사일을 수출하는 등 여러 유엔 안보리 결의를 위반하는 북한의 점점 더 도발적인 수사와 행동을 규탄하는데 한목소리를 내고 있다”고 밝혔습니다.
"We have one voice in condemning North Korea's increasingly provocative rhetoric and actions that violate several U.N. Security Council resolutions, including the export of munitions and ballistic missiles to Russia," Cho said.

또 “우리는 계속 우크라이나를 지원하고 있으며 후티 반군의 공격을 규탄하고 아덴만에서 항행권과 자유를 수호하기 위해 함께 노력하고 있다”고 밝혔습니다.
"We continue to support Ukraine and are working together to condemn the Houthi rebels' attack and to defend the right to navigate and freedom in the Gulf of Aden," it said.

조 장관은 “우리의 모든 행동은 동맹과 확장 억제에 대한 미국의 확고한 공약 덕분에 가능하며, 한국은 이를 전적으로 신뢰하고 있다”고 말했습니다.
"All our actions are possible thanks to the United States' firm commitment to alliance and extended deterrence, and South Korea has full confidence in this," Cho said.

그러면서 “우리의 연합준비태세에는 한 치의 빈틈도 없다”고 밝혔습니다.
"There is no flaw in our joint readiness," he said.

조 장관은 이 밖에 캠프 데이비드 합의 등 미한일이 3국 협력에서 역사적인 진전을 이뤘다고 평가하며 “3국 공조 강화는 공동의 안보 도전에 대처하고 안정을 증진하며 인도 태평양의 번영을 증진하는데 필수적”이라고 말했습니다.

Former U.S. Ambassador to Korea Stephens said, "Minister Cho is focusing on cooperating to help South Korea play a greater role in various areas of the U.S.-Korea alliance," adding, "Minister Cho specifically mentioned participation in the G7."

아울러 “다가오는 나토 정상회의, 민주주의 정상회의와 관련해서도 한국의 확대된 역할을 계속 모색할 것으로 보인다”고 덧붙였습니다.

스티븐스 전 소장은 조 장관이 박진 전 장관과 마찬가지로 블링컨 장관과 긴밀하고 솔직한 관계를 맺고 다양한 문제에 함께 협력할 수 있을 것이라고 말했습니다.
Stevens said Cho, like Park Jin, will be able to establish a close and frank relationship with Blinken and work together on a variety of issues.

Scott Snyder, the next director of the Korea-U.S. Economic Research Institute, said that one of the first people to call immediately after Cho's inauguration was Secretary Blinken, and Minister Cho said that he expects cooperation between the U.S. and China to expand further in economic security.

"I think the economic and security sector and the investment sector are areas where Minister Cho has a personal background and has shown interest," Snyder said. "I think it is also an area that requires active management so that the interests of new investors can be properly accepted."

조태열 장관은 앞서 27일 오전에는 백악관에서 레이얼 브레이너드 국가경제위원회 위원장을 만나 양국간 경제 협력 방안을 논의했습니다.
Earlier on the morning of the 27th, Minister Cho Tae-yeol met with Rayal Brainard, chairman of the National Economic Council, at the White House to discuss economic cooperation between the two countries.
