미국, 디폴트 예상시한 6월 5일로 늦춰져 > 세계

재닛 옐런 미국 재무장관이 26일, 미국 정부 디폴트(채무불이행) 시한을 6월5일로 새로 제시했습니다.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen proposed a new deadline for the U.S. government's default on June 26th.

앞서 옐런 장관은 의회가 부채 한도를 올리지 않을 경우 이르면 6월 1일 연방 정부가 디폴트를 맞을 수 있다고 경고해왔습니다.
Earlier, Yellen had warned that the federal government could default as early as June 1 if Congress did not raise the debt ceiling.

옐런 장관은 이날 케빈 매카시 하원의장에게 보낸 서한에서 "의회가 다음 달 5일까지 부채 한도를 상향하지 않을 경우 정부의 지불 의무를 이행할 자원이 충분하지 않을 것으로 예상한다"고 밝혔습니다.
"If Congress does not raise the debt ceiling by the 5th of next month, we do not expect enough resources to meet the government's payment obligations," Yellen said in a letter to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

이로써 디폴트를 피하기 위한 백악관과 의회 간 부채 한도 조정 협상은 나흘 시간을 벌었습니다.
That gives the White House and Congress four hours to negotiate debt ceiling adjustments to avoid default.

양측 협상은 일정 부분 진전이 있는 것으로 알려졌지만 아직 최종 합의는 나오지 않았습니다.
It is known that some progress has been made in negotiations between the two sides, but no final agreement has been reached yet.

이런 가운데 조 바이든 미국 대통령은 메모리얼 데이를 앞두고 대통령 별장인 ‘캠프 데이비드’로 떠나면서 “합의에 매우 근접했으며 나는 낙관한다”고 말했습니다.
In the midst of this, U.S. President Joe Biden said he was "very close to an agreement and I'm optimistic" as he left for his presidential villa, Camp David, ahead of Memorial Day.

매카시 의장도 기자들과 만나 협상이 중대한 시점에 이르렀다고 밝혔습니다. 그러면서 최종 타결이 이뤄질 때까지 협상은 계속될 것이라고 강조했습니다.
McCarthy also told reporters that negotiations have reached a critical point. He stressed that negotiations will continue until a final settlement is reached.

양측은 2년간 부채 한도를 증액하는 대신 국방비와 퇴역군인 혜택을 제외한 연방 지출을 대부분 동결하는 방안을 논의하고 있는 것으로 알려졌습니다.
The two sides are reportedly discussing freezing most of their federal spending, excluding defense spending and veterans benefits, instead of increasing the debt ceiling for two years.

옐런 장관의 새 디폴트 시한은 미국 국가신용등급에 대한 우려가 커지는 가운데 나왔습니다.

국제 신용평가사 ‘피치(Fitch) ’는 24일, 미국의 국가신용등급 전망을 '부정적'으로 제시하며 신용등급 강등 위험을 경고했습니다.
On the 24th, international credit rating agency "Fitch" presented the U.S. national credit rating outlook as "negative" and warned of the risk of a downgrade.
