한국 외교장관 면담 미 상하원 의원들 “미한일 협력 등 동맹 현안 논의” > 정치

미국 상하원 의원들이 최근 워싱턴을 방문한 조태열 한국 외교장관과의 면담에서 미한일 3국 협력 등 양국 주요 현안을 논의했다고 의회 관계자들이 밝혔습니다.
Members of the U.S. House and Senate discussed major bilateral issues, including trilateral cooperation between the U.S. and Japan, during a recent meeting with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yeol in Washington, congressional officials said.

하원 외교위원회 대변인은 3일 VOA에 “마이클 매콜 위원장과 조 장관은 러시아의 불법적인 우크라이나 전쟁에 대한 북한의 지원과 인도태평양 지역의 지정학적 긴장, 일본과 우리의 3국 관계 강화 등 미한 동맹 관련 사안에 관해 얘기를 나눴다”고 전했습니다.
A spokesperson for the House Foreign Affairs Committee told VOA on the 3rd, "Chairman Michael McCall and Minister Cho talked about issues related to the U.S.-Korea alliance, including North Korea's support for Russia's illegal war in Ukraine, geopolitical tensions in the Indo-Pacific region, and strengthening our trilateral relations with Japan."

공화당의 빌 해거티 상원의원도 조 장관을 만나 미한일 협력 등 양국 주요 현안에 대한 의견을 교환했습니다.
Republican Senator Bill Hagerty also met with Minister Cho and exchanged views on major issues between the two countries, including cooperation between the U.S. and Japan.

Moreover, as both a senator and former U.S. Ambassador to Japan, Senator Hagerty conveyed his strong support for ongoing efforts by President Yoon Suk Yeol and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to deepen the Trilateral strategic partnership among the United States, South Korea, and Japan.”

해거티 의원 대변인은 1일 VOA에 “해거티 의원은 조 장관을 의사당에서 만나 미한 동맹에 매우 중요한 사안에 대해 논의하게 돼 영광이었다”며 양측은 “특히 미한 양국이 인도태평양과 전 세계 점증하는 도전에 대처하는 가운데 두 나라가 외교, 경제, 기술, 안보 관계를 더욱 강화할 수 있는 큰 기회가 있다고 본다”고 밝혔습니다.
Haggerty told VOA on the 1st, "It was an honor to meet with Minister Cho at the Capitol to discuss issues that are very important to the U.S.-Korea alliance," and both sides said, "I think there is a great opportunity for the two countries to further strengthen diplomatic, economic, technological and security relations, especially as the two countries cope with the growing challenges of the Indo-Pacific and around the world."

또한 “상원의원이자 전 주일 미국 대사로서 해거티 의원은 윤석열 한국 대통령과 기시다 후미오 일본 총리가 미한일 3국의 전략적 파트너십을 심화하기 위해 계속 노력하고 있는 것에 대해 강력한 지지를 표명했다"고 덧붙였습니다.
"As a senator and former U.S. ambassador to Japan, Hagerty expressed strong support for the continued efforts of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to deepen the strategic partnership between the U.S. and Japan," he added.

트럼프 행정부 시절 일본 주재 대사를 지낸 해거티 의원은 상원 외교위원회 소속 의원으로 활동하고 있습니다.
Hagerty, who served as ambassador to Japan during the Trump administration, serves on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

미국을 방문한 조 장관은 지난달 28일 매콜 위원장과 하원 외교위 인도태평양 담당 소위원장인 영 김 의원을 함께 만났습니다.
On his visit to the United States, Minister Cho met with Chairman McCall and Representative Young Kim, the sub-chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee's Indo-Pacific Affairs Committee, on the 28th of last month.

또 이날 해거티 의원 외에도 상원 외교위 동아태 소위원장인 민주당의 크리스 밴 홀런 의원을 면담했습니다.
In addition to Haggerty, he also met with Chris Van Hallen of the Democratic Party, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on the same day.
