한미연합사령관 “한국 방위 공약 철통…확장억제 공약, 미국의 모든 능력으로 뒷받침” > 정치

한미연합사령관이 한국에 대한 미국의 굳건한 방위 공약을 재확인했습니다. 미국의 모든 능력을 동원해 한국에 대한 확장억제 공약을 지킬 것이라는 점을 강조했습니다. 박동정 기자가 보도합니다.
The ROK-U.S. Combined Forces Command reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to South Korea. He stressed that he would use all of the U.S. capabilities to keep his pledge to curb the expansion of Korea. Reporter Park Dong-jung reports.

폴 라캐머라 한미연합사령관 겸 주한미군사령관은 30일 한국에 대한 미국의 방위 공약이 철통같다며 이를 의심하지 말아 달라고 당부했습니다.
Paul LaCamera, commander of the South Korea-U.S. Combined Forces Command and commander of the U.S. Forces Korea, said on the 30th that the U.S. defense commitment to South Korea is ironclad and asked not to doubt it.

[녹취: 라캐머라 사령관] “I just say is don't question the United States commitment. It's ironclad. The argument of whether it will trade Seoul for Los Angeles or Washington DC is not even worth addressing…”
[Recording: Commander Lacamera] "저는 단지 미국의 약속에 의문을 제기하지 말라는 것입니다. 철갑입니다. 서울을 로스앤젤레스와 맞바꿀 것인가, 워싱턴 DC와 맞바꿀 것인가에 대한 논쟁은 거론할 가치조차 없습니다."

라캐머라 사령관은 이날 한국국방연구원(KIDA)이 주최한 '국방 포럼' 기조연설에서 "서울을 위해 로스앤젤레스나 워싱턴을 포기할 것인가와 같은 논쟁은 언급할 가치조차 없다"며 이같이 말했습니다.
Commander Lacamera said in a keynote speech at the "Defense Forum" hosted by the Korea Institute for Defense (KIDA), "The debate on whether to give up Los Angeles or Washington for Seoul is not even worth mentioning."

그러면서 "현재 이곳에 사는 미국인의 수, 이 나라를 지키기 위해 목숨을 바친 군인의 수, 이 땅에서 근무한 군인의 수, 그리고 가족 또는 지인과 함께 이곳에 온 사람의 수를 보라”고 강조했습니다.
And he emphasized, "Look at the number of Americans living here now, the number of soldiers who sacrificed their lives to protect this country, the number of soldiers who worked on this land, and the number of people who came here with their family or acquaintances."

라캐머라 사령관은 북한이 한국뿐 아니라 역내 동맹, 파트너, 미국, 심지어 미국 본토까지 위협하는 능력을 계속 발전시켜 왔다고 지적했습니다.
Commander Lacamera says North Korea has continued to develop its ability to threaten not only South Korea but also regional alliances, partners, the United States, and even the U.S. mainland.

특히 북한이 지난 5개월 동안 20회 미사일을 발사해 동북아시아 지역 안보에 도전했으며, 더 나아가 대륙간탄도미사일(ICBM) 탑재를 위해 핵 능력도 고도화하고 있다고 설명했습니다.
In particular, North Korea has launched 20 missiles in the past five months to challenge security in Northeast Asia, and furthermore, it is upgrading its nuclear capabilities to mount intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).

라캐머라 사령관은 “이러한 위협 앞에서 한국에 대한 미국의 공약은 항구적이며 철통같다”고 재확인했습니다.
Commander Lacamera reaffirmed that "the U.S. commitment to South Korea in the face of these threats is permanent and ironclad."

United States commitment to extend deterrence to the Republic of Korea is backed by the full range of the United States capabilities as specified in the Washington declaration.”
[Recording: Commander Lacamera] "이러한 지속적인 위협 앞에서 한국에 대한 미국의 약속은 지속되고 있으며 그것은 철통같은 것입니다. 한국에 대한 억지력을 확대하겠다는 미국의 약속은 워싱턴 선언에 명시된 미국의 모든 능력에 의해 뒷받침됩니다."

아울러 “한국에 대한 미국의 확장억제 공약은 워싱턴 선언에 명시돼 있듯이 모든 범주의 미국 역량에 의해 뒷받침된다”고 말했습니다.
He also said, "The U.S. commitment to extended deterrence against South Korea is supported by all categories of U.S. capabilities, as stated in the Washington Declaration."

앞서 조 바이든 미국 대통령과 윤석열 한국 대통령은 지난달 26일 정상회담을 갖고 북한 위협에 대한 확장억제 강화 방안을 담은 ‘워싱턴 선언’을 채택했습니다.
Earlier, U.S. President Joe Biden and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol held a summit on the 26th of last month and adopted the Washington Declaration, which includes measures to strengthen extended deterrence against North Korean threats.

바이든 대통령은 이 선언에서 북한의 한국에 대한 모든 핵 공격은 즉각적, 압도적, 결정적 대응에 직면할 것이라고 경고했습니다.
In the declaration, President Biden warned that any nuclear attack by North Korea against South Korea would face immediate, overwhelming, and decisive responses.

라캐머라 사령관은 “칭기즈칸은 화살 하나는 부러뜨릴 수 있지만 여러 발의 화살은 튼튼하다고 말했다”며 “하나의 깃발 아래 같이 갑시다”라고 말했습니다.
Genghis Khan said he could break one arrow, but multiple arrows were strong, and "Let's go under one flag together."
