미 국방부 “오스틴 장관, 29일부터 한국·필리핀 순방…역내 방위 공약 강조할 것” > 정치

미국 국방장관이 다음 주 한국과 필리핀 방문에서 역내 방어 공약을 강조할 것이라고 미 국방부가 밝혔습니다. 한국에 대한 미국의 방위 공약이 여전히 확고하다는 점도 강조했습니다. 박형주 기자가 보도합니다.
The Pentagon says the U.S. Secretary of Defense will emphasize regional defense commitments during his visit to South Korea and the Philippines next week. He also stressed that the U.S. commitment to South Korea is still firm. Reporter Park Hyung-joo reports.

미 국방부는 로이드 오스틴 장관이 오는 29일 한국과 필리핀 방문에 나선다고 공식 발표했습니다.
The U.S. Department of Defense officially announced that Secretary Lloyd Austin will visit South Korea and the Philippines on the 29th.

[국방부 보도자료] " Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III will depart Jan. 29 for a trip to the Republic of Korea and the Philippines. During his visits, he will meet with senior government and military leaders in both countries to advance regional stability and further strengthen the defense partnerships with the United States. This trip reaffirms the deep commitment of the United States to work in concert with allies and partners in support of the shared vision of preserving a free and open Indo-Pacific."

국방부는 26일 보도자료에서 이같이 밝히면서 오스틴 장관이 순방 중 양국 정부와 군 고위 지도자들과 만나 역내 안정을 증진하고 미국과의 방위 협력을 더욱 강화할 것이라고 말했습니다.
The Defense Ministry said in a press release on the 26th that Austin will meet with senior government and military leaders during his trip to promote regional stability and further strengthen defense cooperation with the United States.

이어 "이번 순방은 자유롭고 개방된 인도태평양을 수호한다는 공동 비전을 지원하기 위해 동맹, 파트너와 협력한다는 미국의 깊은 의지를 재확인한다"고 설명했습니다.
"This trip reaffirms the deep commitment of the United States to cooperate with allies and partners to support a common vision of defending a free and open Indo-Pacific," he explained.

이와 관련해 사브리나 싱 국방부 부대변인은 26일 정례 브리핑에서 오스틴 장관이 이번 순방에서 “역내에 대한 우리의 (방어)공약을 강조할 것”으로 생각한다고 말했습니다.
In this regard, Sabrina Singh, deputy spokesman for the Ministry of National Defense, said at a regular briefing on the 26th that she believes Austin will "emphasize our (defensive) commitment to the area."

I don't want to get ahead of the Secretary and his trip that you just mentioned, as you know, is coming up and heading out on Sunday but again, our commitment to South Korea remains rock solid. However, he explained that he will announce detailed agendas and detailed schedules later, including whether he will meet with President Yoon Suk Yeol when Austin visits Korea.

싱 부대변인은 이날 북한과 러시아 용병업체 바그너 간 무기 거래에 대한 질문에는 "바그너가 북한으로부터 성공적으로 무기를 조달하고 있다"고 확인하며 “이는 러시아가 더욱 더 고립되고 있으며 무기고가 매우 빠르게 바닥나고 있음을 보여준다"고 설명했습니다.
Asked about the arms deal between North Korea and Russian mercenary company Wagner, Singh confirmed that "Bagner is successfully procuring weapons from North Korea," and explained, "This shows that Russia is becoming more isolated and weapons are running out very quickly."

[녹취: 싱 부대변인] "we've seen the Wagner group try and procure and be successful procuring weapons from North Korea, I think that shows further isolation, that Russia is depleting its stocks pretty pretty quickly. And, you know, again, when you're turning to a country like North Korea, Iran, these are countries that are already isolated from an incredible alliance that has been built around support for Ukraine."

Citing Russia's dependence on North Korea and Iran (to procure weapons), Deputy Spokesman Singh said, "These countries have already been isolated from the outstanding alliances established in relation to Ukraine aid."

한편 '미국이 사거리 1천 km 이상인 중거리 미사일을 일본 등 동아시아에 배치할 계획을 보류했다'는 일본 언론 보도에 대한 확인 요청을 받고 "국방부는 일본에 사거리 500km를 넘는 역량을 배치할 계획이 없다"고 밝혔습니다.
On the other hand, when asked to confirm a Japanese media report that the U.S. has suspended its plan to deploy intermediate-range missiles with a range of more than 1,000 km in Japan and other East Asia, the Ministry of National Defense said it has no plan to deploy capabilities exceeding 500 km in Japan.

그러면서 중거리 미사일에 대한 해당 언론의 추측은 "부정확하다"고 덧붙였습니다.
He added that the media's speculation about the intermediate-range missile was "accurate."

[녹취: 싱 부대변인] "So I've seen the reporting, you know, the department has no plans to deploy capabilities to Japan with a range beyond 500 kilometers. So the reporting, I would, you know, dispute that I think this press speculation on the intermediate range missiles that you were just asking you about, that's inaccurate. We're not going to further comment on internal discussions, but our commitment to Japan remains rock solid, as you saw from the meetings that we had just a few weeks ago with the Secretary in the two plus two. So again, we are always going to continue to modernize and enhance our security capabilities in the region, but I just have nothing more to add on those reports.”

앞서 일본 '요미우리신문’은 24일 복수의 미일 소식통을 인용해 “미국 정부가 지상 발사형 중거리 미사일의 주일미군 배치를 보류할 방침을 굳혔다”고 보도했습니다.
Japan's "Yomiuri Shimbun" earlier reported on the 24th, citing multiple sources from the U.S. and Japan, that "the U.S. government has decided to suspend the deployment of ground-launched intermediate-range missiles to Japan."

이 신문은 “일본의 반격 능력 도입으로 장거리 미사일을 보유하면 중국의 중거리 미사일에 대한 억제력이 강화되기 때문에 필요하지 않다고 판단했다”고 전했습니다.
The newspaper said, "We judged that it was not necessary because Japan's introduction of counterattack capabilities would strengthen China's deterrence against medium-range missiles."

이와 관련해 싱 부대변인은 "내부 논의에 대해 추가 언급은 하지 않을 것"이라며 "일본에 대한 방위 공약이 여전히 확고하다"는 점을 대신 강조했습니다.
In this regard, Deputy Spokesman Singh said, "We will not comment further on internal discussions," stressing instead that "the defense commitment to Japan is still firm."

이어 최근 워싱턴에서 열린 미일 외교·국방장관 2+2 회의를 언급하며 "우리는 항상 역내에서 우리의 안보 역량을 계속 현대화하고 강화할 것"이라고 싱 부대변인은 말했습니다.
"We will always continue to modernize and strengthen our security capabilities in the region," Singh said, referring to the recent US-Japan 2+2 meeting of foreign and defense ministers in Washington.
