펜스 전 부통령은 최근 발간한 회고록 ‘신이여 나를 도와주소서(So Help Me God)’에서 자신이 직접 상당부분 관여했던 트럼프 정부의 대북 정책을 소개하면서 이같이 밝혔습니다.
Former Vice President Pence made the remarks in his recently published memoir So Help Me God, introducing the Trump administration's North Korea policy, which he was directly involved in.

[펜스 전 부통령] “Applying maximum pressure had worked. President Trump’s willingness to answer threats with counterthreats of fire and fury had worked. Kim Jong-un came to the negotiating table and never returned to the missile-testing and nuclear threats while we were in office. Our administration created a pathway for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.”

Pence said, "The maximum pressure was effective. "President Trump's willingness to pose a threat of 'fire and anger' in response to the threat was effective."

이어 “김정은은 협상장에 나왔고 우리가 재임하는 동안 미사일 시험과 핵 위협으로 돌아가지 않았다”며 “우리 정부는 한반도 비핵화를 위한 길을 만들었다”고 밝혔습니다.
"Kim Jong-un came to the negotiation table and did not return to missile tests and nuclear threats while we were in office," he said. "Our government has made a way to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula."

그러면서 “미국의 새 대통령이 취임하자 김정은은 다시 미사일을 발사하고 도발과 위협의 옛 행태로 돌아갔다”며 “나약함은 악을 일으키며, 우리 정부는 평화가 힘에서 시작된다는 것을 증명했다”고 말했습니다.
"When the new U.S. president took office, Kim Jong-un fired missiles again and returned to the old behavior of provocations and threats," he said. "Weakness causes evil, and our government has proven that peace begins with power."

Former Vice President Pence said, "In the past, the U.S. governments played a game of waiting and hope with the Kim dictatorship," and pointed out that North Korea did not keep its promise while imposing sanctions and holding diplomatic meetings to deal with North Korea's nuclear ambitions.

In particular, as North Korea's threatening rhetoric in August 2017 and the threat of an attack on the U.S. mainland lasted for months, President Trump warned that "North Korea will face flames and anger that the world has not seen."

“때로는 비합리적인 것이 가장 합리적인 것”이라고 말했습니다.
"Sometimes being unreasonable is the most reasonable thing," he said.

"President Trump was not afraid to say harsh words or threaten when talking to the enemy," he said. "He intuitively knew how to convey his will in a way that the enemy could understand."

또 자신은 2018년 2월 평창동계올림픽 참석을 위해 방한했을 때 전 세계에 대한 북한의 지속적인 위협과 자국민에 대한 야만적 대우를 전 세계가 잊지 않도록 하는데 집중했다고 밝혔습니다.
He also said that when he visited Korea to attend the PyeongChang Winter Olympics in February 2018, he focused on making sure the world does not forget North Korea's continued threats to the world and its barbaric treatment of its citizens.

이를 위해 방한 당시 북한이 폭침한 천안함을 기리는 기념관을 방문했고 북한 억류 중 사망한 미국 대학생 오토 웜비어의 아버지와 함께 탈북민들을 만났다는 것입니다.
To this end, he visited a memorial in honor of the North's torpedoed Cheonan during his visit to Korea and met North Korean defectors with the father of Otto Warmbier, an American college student who died during North Korean detention.

Former Vice President Pence explained that the two sides agreed to meet at Cheong Wa Dae on February 10, 2018, after the North proposed a meeting through an unofficial channel during his visit to Seoul, but it was canceled two hours before the scheduled time, saying, "The order came from Pyongyang."

그러면서 김여정과 공개적으로 악수를 할 마음은 없었지만 카메라가 없는 상황에서 트럼프 대통령에게 전달할 말이 있다면 들어 볼 의향이 있었다고 펜스 전 부통령은 밝혔습니다.
Former Vice President Pence said he did not intend to shake hands with Kim Yo-jung publicly, but he was willing to listen to President Trump if he had anything to say in the absence of a camera.

펜스 전 부통령은 제 1차 미북 정상회담을 열기 전 김영철 당시 북한 통일전선부장이 백악관을 방문했을 당시의 소회도 밝혔습니다.
Before holding the first U.S.-North Korea summit, former Vice President Pence also expressed his thoughts when Kim Young-chul, then head of the North's United Front Department, visited the White House.

Former Vice President Pence said, "Kim Young-chul was a former intelligence chief and general of North Korea's military," adding, "He was standing in the Oval Office and posing to take a picture with President Trump under a portrait of former President Thomas Jefferson."

"I wasn't crazy about the place," he said. "I recognized the incongruity of the henchmen of one of the world's most brutal dictators posing in the shadow of the Declaration of Independence (Thomas Jefferson).

Pence said the Oval Office is not a sacred place, but only those who meet the values that represent the United States, such as life, freedom, and the pursuit of happiness, have the right to enter it.

다만 왜 트럼프 대통령이 김영철을 백악관에서 환영했는지, 왜 김정은의 모욕과 위협에도 많은 힘과 시간을 들여 대북 외교를 모색했는지 이해했다며 “우리의 진정한 목표는 무엇보다 북한의 핵 프로그램을 끝내는 것이었다”고 말했습니다.
However, he said he understood why President Trump welcomed Kim Young-chul at the White House and spent a lot of time seeking diplomacy with North Korea despite Kim Jong-un's insults and threats. "Our real goal was to end North Korea's nuclear program above all."

펜스 전 부통령은 이러한 목표를 추구하면서도 북한의 실체를 정확히 파악하고 있었다고 말했습니다.
Pence said that while pursuing these goals, he knew exactly what North Korea was.

He then said he had been killed himself at a ceremony at the Pearl Harbor-Hickham Joint Base in Hawaii, and that he thought of his father who participated in the Korean War throughout the ceremony.

He also said his father must have been most proud of that moment during his vice presidential term.

Former Vice President Pence's father, Edward Pence, fought as a lieutenant in the Korean War and was awarded the Order of the Dongsung in 1953 in recognition of his contribution to the Battle of Pokchop Hill.

"I went there to send a message, and I wanted the North Koreans to see my face," Pence said. "The heavily armed North Korean troops were in sight and security was not guaranteed, but I thought it was important to do so."

Pence said his original plan was to receive a briefing behind bulletproof glass in the House of Freedom, adding, "After decades of strategic patience, we decided to go out to convey a message that the time for cruelty, nuclear ambition and provocation against North Koreans is over.

Former Vice President Pence also introduced a direct meeting of three Americans detained in North Korea at Andrew Air Force Base near Washington, D.C., in May 2018, ahead of the U.S.-North Korea summit.

그들이 건넨 카드에 “부통령님 우리를 고국에 데려오는데 있어 당신의 역할에 감사드립니다”라는 말과 “여호와께서 시온의 포로를 돌려 보내실 때에 우리는 꿈꾸는 것 같았도다”라는 성경 구절이 써 있었다며, 매우 감동적인 순간이었다고 펜스 전 부통령은 회고했습니다.
It was a very moving moment, Pence recalled, saying on the card they handed him, "Thank you, Vice President, for your role in bringing us home," and a Bible passage, "We seemed to dream when the Lord sent back Zion's prisoners."
