미 국무부 “한국은 나토의 중요한 파트너…목표와 도전과제 공유” > 정치

윤석열 한국 대통령이 이달 말 한국 정상으로는 처음으로 북대서양조약기구, 나토 정상회의에 참석하는 가운데, 미국 국무부는 한국을 나토의 중요한 파트너로 규정했습니다. 한국과 나토 모두 규칙에 근거한 국제질서를 지키려는 공동의 목표와 도전과제를 안고 있다고 평가했습니다. 함지하 기자가 보도합니다.
With South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol attending the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and NATO summit for the first time as a South Korean leader later this month, the U.S. State Department has defined South Korea as an important partner for NATO. Both South Korea and NATO have shared goals and challenges to uphold a rule-based international order. Reporter Ham Ji-ha reports.

네드 프라이스 국무부 대변인은 “한국이 북대서양조약기구(NATO·나토) 회원국은 아니지만 한국은 나토 동맹과 개별 동맹국의 중요한 파트너”라며 한국의 역할에 기대감을 드러냈습니다.
State Department spokesman Ned Price expressed expectations for South Korea's role, saying, "South Korea is not a member of NATO, but South Korea is an important partner of NATO allies and individual allies."

[녹취: 프라이스 대변인] “You are right that South Korea, of course, is not a NATO ally, but South Korea is an important partner of the NATO alliance and of individual allies. And this will be the second time in recent months that partners from the Indo-Pacific have been included in NATO consultations. The fact is that even though NATO is an alliance, a defensive alliance that protects and promotes the interests of its allies in a different part of the world, there are a number of shared challenges that we face, whether it is the challenge from the PRC, whether it is the challenge of cyber and emerging technology that all of our countries faced.”

프라이스 대변인은 22일 전화 브리핑에서 윤석열 한국 대통령이 다음 주 나토 정상회의에 참석하는 것과 관련한 논평 요청에 “인도태평양 국가들이 나토 협의에 포함된 건 최근 몇 달간 이번이 두 번째”라면서 이런 입장을 밝혔습니다.
In a telephone briefing on the 22nd, spokesman Price said, "This is the second time in recent months that the Indo-Pacific countries have been included in NATO consultations," in a request for comment on South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol's attendance at next week's NATO summit.

이어 “나토는 (인도태평양과) 다른 지역에서 나토 동맹국들의 이익을 보호하고 증진하는 동맹체이자, 방어적 동맹이긴 하지만 우리가 직면한 여러 공동의 도전 과제가 있다”며 “그것이 중국으로부터의 도전이든 사이버와 신흥 기술로 인한 도전이든 그건 우리 모든 나라들이 직면한 것”이라고 설명했습니다.
"NATO is an ally and a defensive ally that protects and promotes the interests of NATO allies in the rest of the world. Whether it's a challenge from China or a challenge from cyber and emerging technologies, it's a challenge for all of us."

그러면서 “결과적으로 우리가 한국 동맹과 함께 인도태평양에서 지키려고 하는 건 유럽에서 나토가 지키려고 하는 것과 정확히 같은 것”이라며 “이는 전 세계에서 전례 없는 수준의 안정과 번영을 촉진하고 이끌어온 규칙에 기반한 질서”라고 프라이스 대변인은 말했습니다.
"As a result, what we are trying to protect in the Indo-Pacific with the Korean Alliance is exactly what NATO is trying to protect in Europe," Price said. "This is a rule-based order that has promoted and led to unprecedented levels of stability and prosperity around the world."

"Russia's attack on a rule-based international order is a threat to the order of Ukraine and the people of Ukraine, and everywhere in the world," he said. "If the order is not attacked, protected, and defended, it is undermined everywhere."

[녹취: 프라이스 대변인] “Russia’s upfront in assault, upfront to an assault on that rules-based international order is a threat not only to Ukraine, and to the people of Ukraine, but to that order everywhere around the world. And anytime that order comes under assault, and it is not vigorously protected and defended, that order is undermined everywhere. That's precisely why we, together with our partners in the Indo-Pacific, have stood up to aggression in that arena as well. When countries in that region seek to challenge the rules based international order, we have come together to make clear that it is an order that we will protect and promote in the face of challenge whether that's in Europe, the Indo-Pacific or anywhere else.”

"That's why we're fighting attacks with our partners in the Pacific," Price said. "When countries in the region are trying to challenge a rule-based international order, we've been with Europe or the Pacific anywhere to make sure it's an order we want to protect and promote."

이어 “블링컨 (국무) 장관은 인도태평양 내 우리 동맹과의 협의를 고대하고 있으며, 이는 지난달 일본과 한국 방문을 마치고 돌아온 바이든 대통령도 마찬가지”라고 덧붙였습니다.
"Secretary of State Blinkan is looking forward to consultations with our allies in the Indo-Pacific, and so is President Biden, who returned from a visit to Japan and South Korea last month," he added.

앞서 한국 정부는 윤석열 대통령이 오는 29일과 30일 스페인 마드리드에서 열리는 나토 정상회의에 한국 정상으로서는 처음으로 참석한다고 밝혔습니다.
The South Korean government said earlier that President Yoon Seok-yeol will be the first South Korean leader to attend the NATO summit in Madrid, Spain, on the 29th and 30th.
