미 의회도서관, 한국전쟁 참전용사 사이트 새 단장…‘노병 22명의 회상’ 담아 > 문화

미국 의회도서관이 오는 11일 재향군인의 날(Veterans Day)을 앞두고 한국전쟁 관련 사이트를 새롭게 단장했습니다. 의회도서관이 소장한 8천 건이 넘는 한국전쟁 참전용사들의 이야기 가운데 다양한 배경을 가진 22명의 증언을 소개하고 있습니다. 김영권 기자가 보도합니다.
The U.S. Library of Congress has refurbished its site related to the Korean War ahead of Veterans Day on the 11th. Among the more than 8,000 stories of Korean War veterans owned by the Library of Congress, 22 testimonies from various backgrounds are introduced. Reporter Kim Young-kwon reports.

미국 의회도서관이 9일 한국전쟁 참전용사들의 핵심적인 증언을 소개하는 코너를 홈페이지에 별도로 개설했습니다.

의회도서관의 모니카 모힌드라 ‘재향군인 역사 프로젝트(Veterans History Project)’ 담당 국장은 9일 VOA에 미 참전용사들의 이야기를 소개하는 ‘Serving: Our Voices’ 코너를 이날 새롭게 개설했다고 밝혔습니다.
Monica Mohindra, director of the Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress, said on the 9th that she opened a new section of "Serving: Our Voices" at VOA that introduces the stories of U.S. veterans.

미국이 참전한 여러 전쟁 가운데 한국전쟁 사이트는 ‘잊히지 않았다(Not Forgtten)’는 제목 아래 한국전쟁 참전용사들의 주제별 증언을 담은 동영상과 오디오를 선택할 수 있게 했습니다.
Among the various wars in which the U.S. participated, the Korean War site allows users to select videos and audio containing thematic testimonies of Korean War veterans under the title "Not Forgotten."

2차 세계대전이라는 서사적 격변과 베트남 전쟁을 둘러싼 격렬한 논쟁 사이에 놓인 한국전쟁은 잊힌 전쟁으로 자주 불리지만 참전했던 570만 명의 미국 남녀들은 자신만의 기억이 있다는 설명이 게재돼 있습니다.
The Korean War, between the epic upheaval of World War II and the fierce debate over the Vietnam War, is often called a forgotten war, but the 5.7 million American men and women who participated in the war have their own memories.

모힌드라 국장은 의회도서관이 1차 세계대전부터 최근의 분쟁에 이르기까지 수많은 전쟁에서 싸운 참전용사들의 이야기를 11만 4천 건 넘게 소장하고 있으며 이 가운데 1만 5천 건 이상이 한국전쟁에 대한 것이라고 설명했습니다.
Mohindra explained that the Library of Congress has more than 114,000 stories of veterans fighting in numerous wars from World War I to recent conflicts, more than 15,000 of which are about the Korean War.

최전선에서 육군 보병으로 고지 점령을 반복하며 혈투를 벌였던 레이몬드 프림, 부산에서 군용기 정비공으로 근무했던 제임스 마카루나스, 공군 조종사로 100회 이상을 출격하며 공산군의 열차 등을 공격했던 윌리엄 싱클레어 등의 이름이 나열돼 있고 이들의 증언을 보고 들을 수 있습니다.
The names include Raymond Prim, who repeatedly occupied the highlands as an army infantryman, James Macaronas, who worked as a military aircraft mechanic in Busan, and William Sinclair, who attacked communist trains more than 100 times as an air force pilot, and you can see and hear their testimony.

모힌드라 국장은 한국전쟁 참전용사들의 증언은 재향군인 프로젝트를 개시한 2000년부터 수집한 것이라고 설명했습니다.
Mohindra explained that the testimony of Korean War veterans was collected since 2000 when the Veterans Project was launched.

특히 참전한 사람들은 누구인지, 왜 참전 결심을 했는지, 집과 마을을 떠날 때 어떤 느낌이었는지, 사랑하는 사람과 어떻게 연락을 주고받았는지 등을 1인칭 시점에서 회상하고 있다고 소개했습니다.
In particular, the participants were reminded of who they were, why they decided to participate, how they felt when they left their homes and villages, and how they communicated with their loved ones.

[녹취: 모힌드라 국장] “And the idea is to get those first person reminiscences. What moved people who served, why they made the decision once if they weren't drafted, what that felt like to leave their home communities, what things smelled like, how they kept in touch with their loved ones.”

한편 11일 미국 재향군인의 날을 앞두고 한국전쟁의 성과를 강조하는 기고문들이 지역 매체에 게재되고 있습니다.
Meanwhile, articles emphasizing the achievements of the Korean War are being published in local media ahead of Veterans Day on the 11th.

미 서부 오리건주의 켈리 피츠패트릭 보훈국장은 8일 지역 언론(Baker City Hearld) 기고를 통해 한국전쟁을 기억하자고 강조했습니다.
Veterans Affairs Director Kelly Fitzpatrick of Western Oregon emphasized in a local media article on the 8th, "Let's remember the Korean War."

피츠패트릭 국장은 “한국전쟁을 ‘잊힌 전쟁’이라고 부르지만 오리건주에 있는 우리는 한국 전쟁에서 자유를 위해 싸운 특별하고 영웅적인 참전 용사들을 절대 잊지 않았고 앞으로도 결코 잊지 않을 것”이라고 말했습니다.
Fitzpatrick said, "We call the Korean War a 'forgotten war,' but we in Oregon have never forgotten and will never forget the special and heroic veterans who fought for freedom in the Korean War."

미 역사학자인 톰 에머리 씨는 ‘야후 뉴스’에 ‘잊힌 전쟁을 기억하며’란 제목의 기고문을 통해 북한 공산군의 침공으로 시작된 한국전쟁의 역사 배경, 사상자 규모를 자세히 소개했습니다.
U.S. historian Tom Emery detailed the history and casualties of the Korean War, which began with the North Korean invasion, in an article titled "Remembering the Forgotten War" in Yahoo News.

에머리 씨는 한국전쟁 정전협정 60주년 기념식 때 미군 당국자가 한 말을 상기하며 한국전쟁의 결과는 “한국에는 60년의 자유, 북한에는 60년의 억압”이었다고 평가했습니다.
Emery recalled what U.S. military officials said during the 60th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice Agreement and evaluated that the result of the Korean War was "60 years of freedom for South Korea and 60 years of oppression for North Korea."
