조지아 주지사, 한국 기업 배터리 공장 투자 환영…오소프 의원 “일자리 창출 기대” > 경제

미국 조지아주 주지사와 상원의원이 전기차 배터리 공장 설립을 위한 한국 기업들의 대규모 투자 계획에 즉각 환영의 뜻을 밝혔습니다. 일자리 창출 등 지역 경제 활성화에 대한 기대감을 나타냈습니다. 조상진 기자가 보도합니다.
The governor and senator of Georgia in the U.S. immediately welcomed South Korean companies' massive investment plans to set up electric vehicle battery plants. It expressed expectations for revitalizing the local economy, including job creation. Reporter Cho Sang-jin reports.

Democratic Senator John Ossoff of Georgia has welcomed large-scale investment by Korean companies.

[오소프 의원실 보도자료] “U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff announced tonight manufacturing incentives in the Inflation Reduction Act have attracted another major industrial investment to Georgia — this time, LG Energy Solution and Hyundai will jointly build a $4.3 billion EV plant in the Peach State.

오소프 의원실은 25일 보도자료를 통해 “존 오소프 상원의원이 오늘 밤 인플레이션 감축법(IRA)의 제조 분야 인센티브 조치가 조지아주에 또 다른 주요 산업 투자를 유치했다고 발표했다”면서, 한국 기업인 ‘현대차그룹’과 ‘LG 에너지 솔루션’이 43억 달러 규모의 전기자동차 관련 공장을 공동 건설할 예정이라고 밝혔습니다.
"Senator John Ossov announced tonight that the IRA's manufacturing incentives have attracted another major industrial investment in Georgia," Ossov's office said in a press release on the 25th.

이어 이 공장은 현대자동차의 전기차 제조 현장에 공급할 새 전기차 배터리를 만드는 공장이 될 것이라며, 이번 투자를 통해 지역에 새로운 일자리가 대거 창출될 것으로 기대한다고 밝혔습니다.
He then said that the plant will be a factory that makes new electric vehicle batteries to supply Hyundai Motor's electric vehicle manufacturing sites, and that he expects the investment to create a large number of new jobs in the region.

The investment is expected to create about 3,000 jobs, and according to the two companies, full-scale production is expected to be possible from the end of 2025.

그러면서 이 같은 성과는 지난 4월 오소프 의원이 조지아주에 있는 기업 대표들로 구성된 ‘경제사절단’을 이끌고 한국을 방문해 두 회사의 경영진과 만나 논의하고, 같은 달 말 워싱턴에서 다시 만나 협의한 뒤 나온 결과라는 점을 강조했습니다.
He also stressed that the achievement came after Representative Ossov led an "economic delegation" consisting of business representatives in Georgia in April to meet and discuss with executives of the two companies and meet again in Washington late the same month.

앞서 현대차그룹과 LG 에너지 솔루션은 한국 시간으로 26일 서울에서 ‘북미 배터리 합작법인 계약 체결식’을 갖고 올해 하반기 중으로 미국 조지아주에 배터리셀 합작공장 건설에 착수하기로 합의했습니다.
Earlier, Hyundai Motor Group and LG Energy Solution held a "North American battery joint venture contract signing ceremony" in Seoul on the 26th, Korean time, and agreed to start building a battery cell joint factory in Georgia in the second half of this year.

두 회사는 약 43억 달러를 공동 투자하며 2025년 말 가동을 목표로 전기차 약 30여만 대에 들어갈 수 있는 연간 30기가와트(GWh)에 달하는 배터리셀을 생산할 예정이라고 밝혔습니다.
The two companies will jointly invest about $4.3 billion to produce 30 gigawatts (GWh) of battery cells per year, which can fit about 300,000 electric vehicles, with the aim of operating them by the end of 2025.

이런 가운데 합작공장이 지어질 조지아주의 브라이언 켐프 주지사도 이날 성명을 통해 한국 기업들의 대규모 투자를 환영했습니다.
Governor Brian Kemp of Georgia, who will build a joint venture, also welcomed large-scale investment by Korean companies in a statement.

켐프 주지사는 “이번 투자는 조지아 주정부 차원에서 현대자동차 그룹 및 LG 에너지 그룹과 신중하게 구축한 강력한 파트너십의 결과로, 조지아주에 긍정적인 소식을 전하게 돼 감사하게 생각한다”고 밝혔습니다.
Governor Kemp said, "The investment is the result of a strong partnership carefully established at the Georgia State level with Hyundai Motor Group and LG Energy Group, and we are grateful to bring positive news to Georgia."

이어 “이것이 바로 우리가 지난해 5월 조지아주가 현대 메타플랜트 공장을 유치했을 때 구상했던 것이며, 이 프로젝트는 조지아가 미국의 전기차 수도가 되기 위한 여정에서 가장 최근의 이정표가 될 것”이라고 강조했습니다.
"This is exactly what we envisioned when Georgia hosted a Hyundai MetapLANT plant in May last year, and this project will be the latest milestone on Georgia's journey to become the electric vehicle capital of the United States," he stressed.

앞서 현대차그룹은 지난달 또 다른 한국 기업 SK온과도 총 50억 달러를 들여 연간 35기가와트 규모의 배터리 합작 공장을 조지아주에 짓기로 합의한 바 있습니다.
Hyundai Motor Group earlier agreed last month with another South Korean company, SK On, to build a 35-gigawatt-a-year battery joint venture in Georgia at a total cost of $5 billion.

한국 기업들의 이 같은 합작공장 설립은 조 바이든 행정부가 적극 추진 중인 인플레이션 감축법(IRA)에 담긴 친환경 제조업 유치 정책의 일환입니다.
The establishment of such joint ventures by Korean companies is part of the Joe Biden administration's policy of attracting eco-friendly manufacturing under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

특히 IRA의 인센티브 조항, 즉 생산세액공제(AMPC) 조항에 따라 미국 내에서 전기차 배터리 셀을 생산할 경우 1킬로와트(KWh) 당 35달러, 배터리 모듈 제조 시 추가 10달러의 보조금을 지급하도록 해 해외 전기차 제조업체들의 미국 내 투자를 견인하고 있다는 평가를 받고 있습니다.
In particular, the IRA's incentive clause, the Production Tax Credit (AMPC) clause, provides subsidies of $35 per kilowatt (KWh) for producing electric vehicle battery cells in the U.S. and an additional $10 for battery modules.

현대차 그룹과 LG 에너지 솔루션은 이번 합작공장 설립을 계기로 “현대차 그룹의 전용 전기차에 안정적으로 배터리를 공급함으로써 폭발적으로 증가하게 될 미국 전기차 수용에 적극 대응할 수 있는 체계를 마련할 수 있을 것”이라고 밝혔습니다.
With the establishment of the joint venture, Hyundai Motor Group and LG Energy Solution said, "By stably supplying batteries to Hyundai Motor Group's exclusive electric vehicles, we will be able to actively respond to the explosive growth in U.S. electric vehicle acceptance."
