Seven major countries (G7) and Australia have said they will join the European Union (EU) price cap on Russian crude.

The G7 and Australia, which include the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, and Italy, issued a joint statement yesterday (2nd) to formalize this.

Earlier in the day, the EU agreed to a ceiling on the price of Russian crude oil at $60 per barrel.

Under the decision, the G7, Australia and the EU will ban insurance and transportation of more than $60 per barrel of crude oil.

Russian crude is currently trading at around $70 a barrel.

Russia has warned that it will cut off the rest of the oil supply through pipelines if the oil price ceiling is implemented.

The move by Western countries follows Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The EU plans to prevent Russia from using the profits it collects from oil sales as war funds.
