Edward Snowden accused of espionage in the United States
Former U.S. intelligence agent Edward Snowden, who exposed secret surveillance activities by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA), has acquired Russian citizenship.
Russian media reported yesterday (2nd) that Snowden recently received a Russian passport and took a citizenship oath.
The news agency reported that Snowden took the oath of citizenship on the 1st.
Snowden's name was previously included in President Vladimir Putin's declaration last September, which calls for granting citizenship to 72 foreigners.
Snowden leaked confidential files carried out by his NSA in 2013, and later defected to Russia.
The U.S. government has insisted that Snowden should be tried for espionage, including revealing state secrets. Snowden faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted in the United States.
State Department spokesman Ned Price said at a regular press briefing yesterday (2nd) that he was aware of Snowden's report on his acquisition of Russian citizenship, but that he was not in a position to confirm whether it was true.
