Kristalina Georgieva, International Monetary Fund President
International Monetary Fund (IMF) President Kristalina Georgieva has warned that global economic growth is likely to fall below 2 percent next year.
Georgieva made the remarks at an event hosted by Reuters yesterday (1st), pointing to the continued impact of the war in Ukraine and the slowing economy in Europe, China and the United States.
In particular, it said that it is concerned about the economic slowdown in China, which was a strong driving force of economic growth in China.
President Georgieva said, "We are concerned that this possibility may go up a little bit."
Earlier in October, the IMF lowered its forecast for next year's global economic growth to 2.7% from 2.9% in July, ahead of Ukraine's war, high energy and food prices, inflation, and steep interest rate hikes.
Meanwhile, World Bank President David Malpass said at the same event that the world's poorest countries have a combined debt of $62 billion over the past year, up 35 percent from the previous year.
Malpass said two-thirds of them are debts to be paid back to China, adding, "I'm worried about a disorderly default process that doesn't really have a system to solve poor countries' debts."
