The heads of diplomatic and defense between Japan and France will hold a 2+2 video security meeting on the theme of cooperation in the Indo-Pacific on the 20th.

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi said at a press conference on the 18th that the two countries share fundamental values and strategic understanding, adding that they will advance security cooperation between the two countries.

Foreign Minister Hayashi and Defense Minister Kishinobuo will attend the meeting on the Japanese side, while Foreign Minister Zhangibre Drian and Defense Minister Florance Parley will attend on the French side.

Foreign Minister Hayashi said at the meeting that various agendas, including regional situations, will be dealt with.

Initially, the two countries planned to hold 2+2 talks face-to-face in Japan at the end of last year, but it was postponed due to the spread of the new coronavirus.

Recently, Japan has been strengthening defense cooperation with European countries such as the UK and Germany in response to China's military build-up and claims of sovereignty in the Indo-Pacific.

France also has the same territory as New Caledonia in the Indo-Pacific, and in 2018, it announced its Indo-Pacific strategy, emphasizing regional stability and the rule of law-based order.

In particular, the French military conducted joint training in Japan last year with the Japanese Athletics Self-Defense Force and the U.S. military to defend remote islands for the first time in history.

France also recently discussed working-level talks with Japan to sign a "Joint Training Agreement" (RAA) that allows the two countries to enter the other country if they conduct joint training and simplifies military procedures such as arms transportation.
