U.S. President Joe Biden stressed the need for international cooperation, saying the COVID-19 pandemic has not yet ended. In particular, it urged to expand access to vaccines, tests, and treatments worldwide. Reporter Cho Sang-jin reports.

President Joe Biden said on the 12th that the international community should further strengthen cooperation, emphasizing global efforts to combat the new coronavirus infection.

In a keynote speech at the "COVID-19 Summit" held in the form of a video conference, President Biden stressed, "The United States has provided more than $19 billion to help countries around the world fight the new coronavirus."

[녹취 : 바이든 대통령] “For our part, the United States has provided more than $19 billion to help countries fight COVID-19 all around the world. We’ve provided lifesaving medicines, oxygen, tests, equipment, supplies, and partnered with countries to improve their capacity to manufacture vaccines as well. We’ve delivered more than 500 million vaccines to 115 different countries. And we’re going to continue to work with COVAX to deliver another 500 million doses — all part of the pledge we made to donate 1 billion doses of vaccine to the most vulnerable in the world.”

"We have provided medicines, oxygen and testing equipment, and we have partnered with other countries to improve their vaccine manufacturing capabilities," he explained.

"We have delivered more than 500 million vaccines to 115 countries, and we will deliver 500 million more in cooperation with the international vaccine supply project 'Covax,' he said. "This is all part of our commitment to donate 1 billion vaccines to the most vulnerable people in the world."

Despite such efforts, however, President Biden said, "The new coronavirus pandemic is not over yet and there is much work left to do."

In particular, millions of people around the world are still dying, millions of children are orphaned, and thousands of people are dying every day, pointing out that more efforts by the international community are needed.

[녹취 : 바이든 대통령] “Today, we’re at a new stage in fighting this pandemic, facing an evolving set of challenges. We have to double down on our efforts to get to — get shots in people’s arms, country by country, community by community; ensure we have reliable and predictable supplies of vaccines and boosters for everyone, everywhere; expand access globally to tests and treatments; and we have to prevent complacency.”

"Today we're at a new stage in the fight against the new coronavirus and we're facing evolving challenges," Biden said. "We need more people to get vaccinated and ensure reliable, predictable vaccinations and additional vaccinations for everyone, by country and by community."

He also stressed that "access to tests and treatments should be expanded worldwide," and that people should not be complacent in dealing with COVID-19.

President Biden specifically says the U.S. is working with global funds to share key technologies used in vaccine manufacturing through the World Health Organization and to implement pilot programs to expand rapid testing and antiviral treatments for people in areas with poor access.

It also added that it will donate an additional $200 million to the World Bank's Global Health Fund to prepare for the upcoming pandemic, totaling $450 million.

He stressed that this meeting will be an opportunity to take the lead in controlling the pandemic and preventing future health crises.

Meanwhile, South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol also expressed his intention to make efforts to help South Korea contribute more to the international community against the global pandemic of the new coronavirus in a video address.

[South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol] "We will provide sufficient supplies and safe and fast vaccinations to countries in urgent need of vaccines. We will actively support developing countries' efforts to self-sufficiency vaccines by establishing the World Health Organization's global bio-human resource training hub."

President Yoon made the announcement at the multilateral summit for the first time since taking office on the 10th and explained that he will contribute an additional $300 million to the ACT-A initiative to speed up the development of treatments and vaccines and ensure fair distribution.

He also said he would actively participate in the Global Health and Security Initiative (GHSA) to strengthen international cooperation, and stressed that the international community will quickly mobilize sufficient funds to prepare for new infectious diseases and other health crises.

The "COVID-19 Summit," the second of its kind since September last year, was held under the leadership of the United States to discuss ways to end the new coronavirus pandemic and jointly cope with future health threats.
