폼페오 전 장관 “김정은, 주한미군 필요하다고 말해…핵무기 완전 폐기도 약속” > 정치

마이크 폼페오 전 미 국무장관이 김정은 북한 국무위원장으로부터 주한미군이 필요하다는 말을 들었다고 전했습니다. 김 위원장이 핵무기의 완전한 폐기도 약속했다고 밝혔습니다. 이조은 기자가 보도합니다.

트럼프 행정부 시절 중앙정보국(CIA) 국장과 국무장관을 지낸 마이크 폼페오 전 장관이 새 회고록 ‘조금도 물러서지 않는다: 내가 사랑하는 미국을 위한 싸움’ (Never Give an Inch: Fighting for the America I Love)을 24일 출간했습니다.
Former Secretary Mike Pompeo, who served as CIA Director and Secretary of State during the Trump administration, released his new memoir "Never Give an Inch: Fighting for the America I Love" on the 24th.

이 회고록에서 폼페오 전 장관은 CIA 국장 시절인 2018년 3월 비밀리에 북한을 방문해 김정은 국무위원장과 만난 경험을 소개하며 주한미군에 대해 나눴던 이야기를 전했습니다.
In the memoir, Pompeo secretly visited North Korea in March 2018, when he was CIA director, and introduced his experience meeting with Kim Jong-un, telling stories about the U.S. Forces Korea.

폼페오 전 장관은 “나는 그(김 위원장)에게 ‘중국 공산당은 미국에 일관되게 주한미군 철수가 김 위원장을 매우 기쁘게 할 것이라고 밝혔다’고 말했다”며 “이 말에 김 위원장은 웃으며 탁자를 두드리면서 중국인들은 거짓말쟁이라고 소리쳤다”고 밝혔습니다.
"I told him (Chairman Kim) that 'the Chinese Communist Party consistently told the U.S. that the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Korea would make Chairman Kim very happy,'" former Minister Pompeo said. "At this, Chairman Kim laughed and shouted that the Chinese people were liars."

At this, Kim laughed and pounded on the table in sheer joy, exclaiming that the Chinese were liars. He said that he needed the Americans in South Korea to protect him from the CCP, and that the CCP needs the Americans out so they can treat the peninsula like Tibet and Xinjiang. Policymakers take note: expanding US missile and ground capabilities on the Korean Peninsula won’t bother the North Koreans at all.”

그러면서 “정책 입안자들은 한반도에서 미국의 미사일과 지상 역량을 확대해도 북한 사람들이 전혀 신경쓰지 않을 것이라는 점에 주목해야 한다”고 강조했습니다.
"Policymakers should pay attention to the fact that North Koreans will not care at all if the U.S. expands its missile and ground capabilities on the Korean Peninsula," he stressed.

폼페오 전 장관은 또한 당시 김 위원장이 세 가지 약속을 했다고 전했습니다.
Pompeo also said Kim made three promises at the time.

In his memoir, Pompeo also revealed an anecdote that Kim Jong-un made a joke about his assassination at the time.

I know you’ve been trying to kill me.’ My team and I had prepared for this moment, but ‘a joke about assassination’ was not on the list of ‘things he may say when he greets you.’ But I was, after all, director of the CIA, so maybe his bon mot made sense. I decided to lean in with a little humor of my own: Mr. Chairman, I’m still trying kill you. In the picture taken seconds after that exchange, Kim is still smiling. He seemed confident that I was kidding.”

"My team and I prepared for this moment, but 'joke about assassination' was not on the list of 'what he (Chairman Kim) could say when he said hello', but I was the director of the CIA, so his (Chairman Kim's 'witty joke' made sense."

이어 “나는 스스로 약간의 유머를 섞어 다가가기로 했다”며 ‘위원장님, 나는 여전히 당신을 죽이려고 합니다’라고 말했다고 전했습니다.
He then said, "I decided to approach myself with a little humor," adding, "Chairman, I'm still trying to kill you."

폼페오 전 장관은 2019년 트럼프 당시 대통령과 김 위원장의 비무장지대(DMZ) 회동에 문재인 당시 한국 대통령이 함께 참석하길 원했지만 성사되지 못한 일화도 공개했습니다.
Former Secretary Pompeo also revealed an anecdote that the South Korean president at the time of Moon Jae In wanted to attend the 2019 Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) meeting between then President Trump and Chairman Kim, but it did not take place.

폼페오 전 장관은 당시 회동에 참석할 명단을 짜는 데 있어 “가장 큰 도전은 우리가 직면해야 할 것으로 알고 있었던 것”이라면서 “문재인 한국 당시 대통령이 이 역사적인 행사의 일부가 되길 요구할 것이라는 점”이라고 말했습니다.
"The biggest challenge we knew we would have to face," Pompeo said in drawing up a list to attend the meeting at the time, "is that we would demand then-President Moon Jae In of Korea to be part of this historic event."

[폼페오 전 장관] “The biggest challenge was the one we knew we would have to confront: South Korean president Moon Jae-in was going to demand to be part of this historic event. To make matters more complicated, we would be inside his country as we departed for and returned from the DMZ. President Moon called me directly multiple times, and my answer to him was well-rehearsed: Chairman Kim prefers to meet just with President Trump. Moon wasn’t a happy camper, but we made the right call, as Chairman Kim had neither time nor respect for President Moon.”

또 “문제를 더 복잡하게 한 것은 우리가 DMZ를 드나들면서 한국 안에 있을 것이라는 점이었다”며 “문재인 당시 대통령은 나에게 여러 차례 직접 전화를 했다”고 밝혔습니다.
"What made the problem more complicated was that we would be in Korea as we went in and out of the DMZ," he said. "President Moon Jae In at the time called me directly several times."

이어 “나의 답변은 잘 준비돼 있었다”며 그 답변은 “김 위원장은 트럼프 대통령과 단둘이 만나는 것을 선호한다는 것이었다”고 말했습니다.
"My answer was well prepared," he said, adding, "Chairman Kim prefers to meet with President Trump alone."

그러면서 “당시 문 대통령은 만족하지 않았지만, 김 위원장이 당시 문 대통령에 대한 존경심도 없고 시간도 없는 가운데 우리는 올바른 선택을 했다”고 밝혔습니다.
"President Moon was not satisfied at the time, but we made the right choice while Chairman Kim had no respect for President Moon at the time and had no time," he said.

폼페오 전 장관은 트럼프 행정부 시절 총 4차례 북한을 방문했습니다.
Former Secretary Pompeo visited North Korea four times during the Trump administration.

첫 방북 이후 국무장관으로 임명된 폼페오 전 장관은 같은 해 5월 다시 북한을 방문해 김 위원장을 만났고, 당시 북한에 억류됐던 한국계 미국인 3명의 미국 송환을 이끌었습니다.
Former Secretary of State Pompeo, who was appointed as Secretary of State after his first visit to North Korea, visited North Korea again in May of the same year to meet with Kim, and led the repatriation of three Korean-Americans detained in North Korea.

이후 싱가포르 미-북 정상회담 이후인 같은 해 7월 3차 방북길에 올랐지만, 당초 예상됐던 김 위원장과의 면담이 불발되며 ‘빈손 귀국’이라고 비판받기도 했습니다.
Since then, he has been on his third trip to North Korea in July of the same year after the U.S.-North Korea summit in Singapore, but was criticized for "returning empty-handed" as the originally expected meeting with Chairman Kim failed.

폼페오 전 장관의 4차 방북 계획은 2차 미북 정상회담 취소로 불발됐다가 같은 해 10월 다시 성사됐지만 미북 비핵화 협상은 이후에도 계속 답보 상태를 벗어나지 못했습니다.
Former Secretary Pompeo's fourth visit to North Korea failed due to the cancellation of the second U.S.-North Korea summit and was re-established in October of the same year, but the U.S.-North Korea denuclearization negotiations continued to stall.

한편 폼페오 전 장관은 마이크 펜스 전 부통령, 니키 헤일리 전 유엔대사, 론 디샌티스 플로리다 주지사 등과 함께 다음 미국 대선의 차기 공화당 후보로 거론되고 있습니다.
Pompeo, along with former Vice President Mike Pence, former U.N. Ambassador Nicky Haley and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, is considered the next Republican candidate for the next U.S. presidential election.
