In 49 days, the South Korean government has launched independent sanctions targeting individuals and institutions involved in North Korea's nuclear and missile development. By simultaneously imposing sanctions with the United States and Japan, they showed a strong willingness to cooperate in response to North Korea's provocations. Reporter Kim Hwan-yong reports from Seoul.

The South Korean government said on the 2nd that it will designate eight individuals and seven institutions that have been involved in North Korea's nuclear and missile development and avoidance of sanctions against North Korea as independent sanctions targets.

It is the first time in 49 days that the South Korean government has imposed independent sanctions on North Korea since the inauguration of the Yoon Suk Yeoln government, following October 14.

Trade banks Lee Myung-hoon and Lee Jung-won, Daesung Bank Choi Sung-nam and Ko Il-hwan, Geumgang Group Bank Baek Jong-sam, and Unification Development Bank Kim Chul were among those who were involved in financial transactions related to North Korea's nuclear and missile development.

In addition, Singaporean Kwok Ki-sung and Taiwan national Chun Si-hwan were designated as independent sanctions targets for their involvement in the transport of oil and other sanctioned goods through illegal transshipment between ships.

The institutions include the North's illegal financial activities, the North's gold company, the Namgang trade related to the sending of North Korean workers, and the ship's shipbuilding company, Pocheon ship company, New Eastern Shipping, Ansar Trading, and Swansysport service.

The U.S. also designated three North Korean Workers' Party officials who were involved in North Korea's WMD and ballistic missile development as additional sanctions, and Japan put three organizations and one individual on the list of sanctions.

[Recording: Professor Kim Hyun-wook] "With China and Russia not cooperating with the U.N. Security Council on sanctions against North Korea amid the U.S.-China competition, the U.S. is trying to establish and strengthen cooperation for sanctions from its allies, and I think it is also a warning against North Korea's additional nuclear tests."

The U.S. has already designated all eight individuals and seven institutions designated by the Korean government as sanctions targets.

South Korea's Foreign Ministry said South Korea, the U.S., and Japan simultaneously announced their own sanctions against North Korea, saying, "It shows the strong and united will of the three U.S. and Japan to respond firmly to North Korea's nuclear and missile development."

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, "The government has been working closely with the U.S. and Japan regarding independent sanctions against North Korea. I think it is also meaningful in that similar countries, including South Korea, Japan, and the U.S., designate independent sanctions cross-wise and overlapping manner."
