Japan succeeded in intercepting the Aegis ballistic missile.
Japan's Defense Ministry said on the 21st that it launched an SM-3 Block 2A interceptor missile equipped with an Aegis destroyer off Hawaii on the 15th.
He also explained that the missile destroyed the target of an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM), a mock ballistic missile launched by the U.S. military, at an altitude of more than 100 kilometers.
SM-3 Block 2A, jointly developed by Raytheon of the United States and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of Japan, is a maritime interceptor missile system that can be mounted on Aegis destroyers. Raytheon says the missile has improved momentum and target identification to defend a large area.
Japan's Defense Ministry stressed that it is possible to respond to ballistic missiles by defending the expanded altitude and range.
It cost about $782 million to jointly develop a three-block 2A missile. This is the first time the missile has been launched from a Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer.
Japan's Defense Ministry said four out of eight Aegis destroyers belonging to the Maritime Self-Defense Force could launch the interceptor missiles, explaining that it will proceed with the deployment from this fiscal year.
