U.S. Ambassador to Japan Ram Lee Manual met with the new Japanese defense minister on the 17th to discuss the U.S.-Japan alliance and the threat from North Korea.
Lee said on his social network service Twitter account that he met with Japan's new defense minister, Yasukazu Hamada.
"Defense Minister Hamada, like his predecessor, showed his firm determination to support rule-based order and join us in confronting Beijing and Pyongyang's provocations," he said.
"The alliance is safe with this experienced and capable leader," he added.
Japan's Defense Minister Hamada, appointed on the 10th, is a security expert who served as defense minister under Taro Aso's government and as deputy defense secretary under the House of Representatives.
Earlier, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke to Hamada over the phone on the 16th and reaffirmed his joint commitment to strengthening the U.S.-Japan alliance and confirmed his cooperation in a concrete and innovative defense plan aimed at protecting the free and open Indian Pacific.
