K-pop band BTS attended a human rights event at the U.N. General Assembly held at the U.N. headquarters in New York in September last year.

A special event will be held at Stanford University in the U.S. to highlight North Korean human rights issues by linking them with K-pop, South Korea's popular music, which has increased its international status. No one is better positioned to speak out for North Koreans than South Korean K-pop stars. I'm Ahn Soyoung.

Stanford University's Asia-Pacific Research Institute's Korean Studies Program announced that it will hold a two-day special event on May 19 and 20 to shed light on North Korean human rights through K-pop to mark the 20th anniversary of its opening.

Professor Shin Ki-wook, director of Stanford University's Asia-Pacific Research Institute and general manager of the Korean Studies program, said in a phone call with VOA on the 19th that the purpose of the event is to create synergy by combining two topics that most Americans think of "Korea."

[Recording: Professor Shin Ki-wook] "There are two topics of interest in the United States: North Korean human rights and K-pop." It's similar to a strategy meeting where we think about how to connect the topics that the American public is interested in with Korean studies."

Professor Shin pointed out that K-pop is currently an international issue with increased status, but North Korean human rights are not properly receiving attention.

He said he would take this opportunity to try a new approach that would shift Americans' interest in K-pop to the North Korean human rights issue.

Shin said he would invite many K-pop stars, including former U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, former White House national security adviser H.R. McMaster and idol group EXO's Suho, to discuss security on the Korean Peninsula, human rights, U.S.-North Korea relations, and South Korea's soft power.

In particular, some point out that Korean K-pop stars, whose international status has increased, should speak out on international issues.

[Recording: Professor Shin Ki-wook] "I think there's a demand from K-pop fans. Korean K-pop stars are conservative. I don't raise a problem on controversial issues without speaking out, but if I've grown this much, I think I can speak out now, so that I can play a role as a global star."

Professor Shin said he expects K-pop stars to resonate with North Korean human rights issues that are neglected compared to Afghanistan and Myanmar in that respect.

[Recording: Professor Shin Ki-wook] "North Korean human rights issues are very important, but pop stars in the U.S. and other countries don't do North Korean human rights issues. Isn't this at least the problem that K-pop stars can approach? Anyway, it's Korea's problem and human rights are a universal issue."

Professor Shin also pointed out in a recent column in the U.S. diplomatic magazine "Diplomat" that K-pop stars must break their silence and start engaging in internationally important issues in order for K-pop, whose status has increased, to continue to exert its power around the world.

People from many countries, including Myanmar, who are fighting for democratization, also post messages in Korean, posting the names of K-pop stars on social networking services.

In addition, Professor Shin pointed out that K-pop stars such as "Black Pink" and "BTS" resonated at the scene of protests against Myanmar's coup and the 2020 Black Lives Matter, a U.S. black human rights movement.

Shin said that even the world's most oppressive regime in North Korea is no match for K-pop.

Despite the threat of execution of individuals caught listening to pop, K-pop continues to be popular among North Koreans.

Professor Shin stressed that North Korean human rights issues could be an important cause for K-pop stars to be interested in, and that no one seems better placed to speak out for their "brothers" than South Korean idols.
