매주 금요일 북한 관련 화제성 소식을 전해 드리는 ‘뉴스 풍경’입니다. 한국 드라마 ‘오징어 게임’ 열풍이 이어지고 있습니다. ‘BTS’, ‘블랙핑크’ 등 K-팝에 이어 K-드라마, K-영화 등 `한류'가 미국뿐 아니라 세계적으로 선풍적인 인기를 끌고 있는 상황입니다. 장양희 기자가 탈북민들의 이야기를 들어봤습니다.
It is a "news scene" that delivers news about North Korea every Friday. The Korean drama "Squid Game" craze continues. Following K-pop such as "BTS" and "Black Pink," "Korean Wave" such as K-drama and K-movie are gaining sensational popularity not only in the United States but also around the world. Reporter Jang Yang-hee listened to the stories of North Korean defectors.

지난달 17일 미국의 온라인 스트리밍 서비스 넷플릭스가 공개한 한국의 드라마 시리즈 ‘오징어 게임’.
"Squid Game," a Korean drama series released by Netflix, an online streaming service in the United States, on the 17th of last month.

동심을 자극하는 한국의 놀이가 드라마 속에서는 어른들의 생명을 앗아가는 생존게임으로 바뀝니다.
Korean play that stimulates childhood innocence turns into a survival game that kills adults in the drama.

이 드라마 시리즈는 첫 시작부터 지금까지 연속 시청률 1위를 기록하며 전 세계인의 뜨거운 관심을 얻고 있습니다.
This drama series has been receiving keen attention from people around the world, ranking first in consecutive ratings from the beginning to the present.

탈북민 시청자들은 그러나 잔인하고 냉정한 극 중 현실에 불편한 심기를 나타냅니다.
North Korean defector viewers, however, feel uncomfortable with reality in the cruel and cold play.

2004년 탈북해 미 동부 버지니아 주 리치몬드에서 개인사업체를 운영하는 30대 여성 소리아 린 씨입니다.
This is Soria Lynn, a woman in her 30s who defected from North Korea in 2004 and runs a private business in Richmond, Virginia, eastern United States.

[녹취: 소피아 린] “성장하는 사춘기 청소년들에게는 좋은 걸 배우기 전에 남을 죽여야 내가 산다, 이런 이미지? 돈을 벌기 위해 땀을 흘리는 게 아니라 서로 죽이고 죽을 수도 있다, 이런 걸 너무 선명하게, 청소년들에게 좋은 이미지를 줄 것 같지는 않아요. 우리 애들을 못 보게 하는데 벌써 봤더라고요.”
[Recording: Sophia Lynn] "For growing adolescents, you have to kill others before you learn good things". I don't think it'll give teenagers a good image too clearly, saying that they can kill each other and die, not sweat to make money. "I don't let my kids see it, but they already saw it."

영국의 북한인권단체인 징검다리의 박지현 대표는 드라마를 보며 북한의 계급사회가 떠올랐다면서, 자본주의 사회 인간의 가치에 대한 극단적인 인상을 심어줬다고 비판합니다.
Park Ji-hyun, CEO of the stepping stone bridge, a North Korean human rights organization in the UK, criticizes that watching the drama reminded him of North Korea's class society and gave him an extreme impression of human value in a capitalist society.

녹취: 박지현] ”그 사람들이 어려우니까 이제 돈을 빌리고 이렇게 빚을 많이 졌는데, 이제 그 사람들이 이 사회에서 쓸모없는 사람들로 분류되는 것 자체가 나쁜 것 같아서, 결국은 자본주의는 돈이 없으면 사람이 죽는다는 그런 거잖아요. 많은 북한 사람들이 한국에서도 살고 영국에서도 살지만 저희가 느낀 것이 저희가 노력한 것만큼 저희가 누릴 수 있는 가치가 많아지는 거잖아요.”
Recording: Park Ji-hyun] "Since they are having a hard time, they borrowed money and owed so much, but now it seems bad for them to be classified as useless people in this society, so capitalism means that people die if they don't have money." Many North Koreans live in South Korea and the UK, but what we feel is that we have as much value as we have tried."

미 서부 유타주에 거주하는 탈북민 제이크 김 씨 부부는 자본주의의 부정적 측면을 비극적으로 다뤘다는 점에 주목했다고 말합니다.
Jake Kim and his wife, a North Korean defector living in western Utah, say they noted that they tragically dealt with the negative aspects of capitalism.

[녹취: 제이크 김] ”저희도 그걸 보면서 제 와이프가 먼저 이야기를 하더라고요. 이건 진짜 북한에서 미국을 비난하기 딱 좋은 드라마라고 이야기를 했었는데, 그런데 아니나 다를까..”
[Recording: Jake Kim] "My wife talked about it first while we were watching it. I said that this is a drama that's perfect for North Korea to criticize the United States, but sure enough..."

예상대로 북한이 ‘오징어 게임’을 남한 사회를 비판하는 선전 도구로 사용했다는 겁니다.
As expected, North Korea used the Squid Game as a propaganda tool to criticize South Korean society.

북한은 최근 대외 선전매체 ‘메아리’를 통해 `오징어 게임'을 극단적인 경쟁으로 인간성이 말살된 남한 사회 자본주의의끔찍한 민낯을 보여준다’고 비난했습니다.
North Korea recently criticized the "Squid Game" through its external propaganda media "Echo" for showing the terrible bare face of South Korean social capitalism, whose humanity has been wiped out by extreme competition.

탈북민들은 북한 내 이런 반응은 북한 정권의 불안함을 보여주는 것이라며, 북한에서 한국의 음악과 영상 등을 경험하는 것이 탈북의 직접적인 배경이 된다고 지적합니다. 2006년 미국에 입국한 데보라 최 씨입니다.
North Korean defectors point out that this reaction in North Korea shows the anxiety of the North Korean regime, and that experiencing South Korean music and videos in North Korea is the direct background of North Korea's defection. This is Deborah Choi, who entered the United States in 2006.

[녹취: 데보라 최] “밤새 3일 동안 봤거든요. 거기서 결정적으로, 아! 난 이 나라를 뜨고 싶다. 같은 청년인데 어떻게 이렇게 살 수 있나. 자유로운 연애, 자유로움. 우리는 생활총화해야 하는데, 죽어서라도 가보고 싶다.. 그 뒤로 바로 준비했어요.”
[Recording: Deborah Choi] "I watched it all night for 3 days." And then definitely... Ah! I want to leave this country. How can you live like this when you're the same young man? Free relationship, freedom. We have to sum up our lives, but I want to go there even when I die. I prepared it right after that."

2003년 한국에서 큰 인기를 끌었던 드라마 ‘옥탑방 고양이’는 데보라 최 씨에게 남한 청년의 현실로 느껴졌고, 바로 탈북행을 준비한 겁니다.
The drama "Rooftop Cat," which was very popular in Korea in 2003, felt like a South Korean young man's reality to Deborah Choi, and he prepared to defection from North Korea.

열일곱살에 처음으로 한국 드라마 ‘천국의 계단’을 시청하고 한국의 트로트 가요를 들었다는 소피아 씨도 북한으로 유입된 한국의 영상과 음악은 탈북하게 된 첫 동기였다고 말합니다.
Sophia, who first watched the Korean drama Stairway to Heaven and listened to South Korean trot songs at the age of 17, also says that the video and music of South Korea flowing into North Korea were the first motives for defection.

[녹취: 소피아 린] “그게 첫 번째 동기죠. 자유주의 색깔에 물이 덜컥 들었달까요? 노래를 들으면서 어디 가서 내 감정을 마음대로 표현할 수 있는 세상이 있구나. 북한에서는 정해진 틀에서만 하잖아요. ‘천국의 계단’을 보면서 나도 저렇게 와인이라는 게 어떤 맛인지 마셔보고 싶다. 파란 바다에서...그런 욕망.”
[Recording: Sophia Lynn] "That's my first colleague." The color of liberalism suddenly got colored. There is a world where I can express my feelings freely anywhere while listening to music. In North Korea, they only do it in a fixed frame. While watching "Stairway to Heaven," I want to drink wine like that. In the blue sea...That kind of desire."

민간단체인 원코리아의 이현승 워싱턴 지부장도 북한과 중국을 오가며 한국의 드라마와 영화, 음악을 접했다며, 북한 주민들에게는 차가운 얼음장이 봄날에 녹아내리는 경험으로 회고합니다.
Lee Hyun-seung, head of the Washington branch of One Korea, a private organization, also recalled that he encountered South Korean dramas, movies, and music between North Korea and China, and that North Koreans experienced the melting of cold ice on spring days.

[녹취: 이현승] ”저도 북한에 있을 때 아무 것도 안 하고 한국 드라마를 본 기억이 있는데, 사람들이 아무래도 북한에서는 볼 수 없는 신선한 것이죠. 말하자면 북한은 얼음장처럼 차갑거든요. 봄날의 눈이 녹잖습니까? 사람들의 마음 속에 녹아 들어가는 효과가 있습니다...”
[Recording: Lee Hyun-seung] "When I was in North Korea, I remember watching Korean dramas doing nothing, but it's something fresh that people can't see in North Korea." In other words, North Korea is as cold as ice. The snow melts on a spring day, right? It has the effect of melting into people's hearts."

중국에서 한국 드라마를 처음 봤다는 박지현 씨는 북한에서 느끼지 못했던 행복감을 느꼈던 기억을 회고하며 북한 주민들의 심정을 짐작할 수 있다고 말합니다.
Park Ji-hyun, who said she watched a Korean drama for the first time in China, recalls her memories of feeling happiness that she did not feel in North Korea and says she can guess how North Koreans feel.

[녹취: 박지현] ”한국 위성TV를 찾아봤어요. 처음 드라마가 ‘사랑이 뭐길래’, ‘대발’이 나오는 거, 그 드라마를 보면서 북한에서 느껴보지 못했던 가족에 대한 이야기, 드라마 자체가 가족에 대한 이야기여서 신비로웠어요. 아직도 장면이 머리에 떠오르는데, 행복하다는 느낌? 북한 주민들이 숨어서 보잖아요? 노래를 들었을 때 저 같은 기분일 거 같아요. 힘들었던 거 사라지고, 웃음이 나오는.. 마음일 거 같아요.”
[Recording: Park Jihyun] "I watched Korean satellite TV". It was mysterious that the first drama was "What is Love" and "Daebal," the story of a family that I had not felt in North Korea while watching the drama, and the drama itself was about my family. I still remember the scene. I feel happy. When North Koreans hide and watch, I think you'll feel the same way when you listen to the song. The hard times disappeared and laughter came out. I think it's up to you."

탈북민들은 이런 경험이 정치선전물로 지친 북한 주민들에게 신세계와 같은 경험이며, 생각을 바꾸게 만든다고 입을 모읍니다.
North Korean defectors agree that this experience is a new world-like experience for North Koreans who are tired of political propaganda and makes them change their minds.

제이크 김 씨는 북한의 세뇌교육을 무너뜨릴 수 있는 것이 한류라며, 군사력보다 강력한 것이라고 말합니다.
Jake Kim says that the Korean Wave can break down North Korea's brainwashing education, which is stronger than military power.

[녹취:제이크 김] “북한 사람들이 한국 노래나 한국 드라마를 볼 때 느끼는 감정을 한국의 하시는 분들이 이해할 수가 없어요. 노래를 듣고 우리가 느끼는 그 감정을. 북한의 모든 영화 다큐멘터리 노래 이 모든 것을 다 그냥 세뇌교육을 위한 중국의 충성을 강요하는 김일성에게 충성 김 씨 가문의 충성을 요구하는 어떤 그런 교육적인 목적으로 만들어진 것이기 때문에...정말 한국 노래는 그렇게 부드럽고 정말 표현이 그렇게 노래를 부를 수가 없어요. 사실 그런 문화적인 영향이 군사적인 어떤 것보다도 크다고 생각합니다. 제가 경험을 해봤기 때문이고 다른 거 필요 없어요. 한국이 좋다고 하는 선전방송보다 그냥 일상의 그리고 어떤 문화 노래 드라마 이런 것들이 북한 사람들한테 미치는 영향은 진짜 파워풀합니다.”
[Recording: Jake Kim] "I can't understand how North Koreans feel when they watch Korean songs or Korean dramas. The emotions that we feel after listening to the song. Since all the North Korean film documentary songs are made for educational purposes such as asking loyal Kim's family to be loyal to Kim Il-sung, who forces China's loyalty for brainwashing education...Korean songs are so soft and expressive. I can't sing like that. In fact, I think such a cultural impact is greater than anything military. It's because I've experienced it and I don't need anything else. Rather than propaganda broadcasts that Korea likes, the impact of daily life and certain cultural song dramas on North Koreans is really powerful."

제이크 김 씨는 한국 영상물을 보며 북한과 다른 발언의 자유와 기본 인권이 보장되는 상황을 배우는 동시에 체제에 대한 불만이 종합적으로 탈북에 영향을 끼친다고 말했습니다.
Jake Kim said that while watching Korean videos, he learns a situation where freedom of speech and basic human rights are guaranteed different from North Korea, complaints about the system comprehensively affect North Korea's defection.

박지현 씨는 북한은 현재 문화전쟁을 치르고 있다며, 북한이 영상과 음악, 책 등으로 주민을 교육한 것과 같은 방식으로 정권에 위협을 받고 있고 김정은도 이를 안다고 말했습니다.
Park Ji-hyun said North Korea is currently engaged in a cultural war, and that North Korea is threatened by the regime in the same way as it trained its residents with videos, music, and books, and Kim Jong-un knows it.

[녹취: 박지현] ”지금 90년대 지나서 젊은이들이 한국 문화에 의해서 또 다른 세계를 보고 있으니까. 지금 김정은이 (한류를) 반동문화라고 얘기하고 특히 최근에 한국 하고 미국은 우리의 주적이 아니라 전쟁이 바로 우리 주적이라고 얘기하면서도 한국 문화는 반동문화라는 걸 말했을 때, 김정은도 알고 있는 거죠. 문화가 어떻게 사람들을 바뀌게 하고 그 문화 자체가 북한 안에 내부를 어떻게 무너뜨릴 수 있는지, 가장 무서운 진짜 핵무기보다 무섭다고 여기고 있다고 말하고 싶고요.”
[Recording: Park Ji-hyun] "Now, after the 90s, young people are looking at another world by Korean culture." Kim Jong-un now says (Korean Wave) is a reactionary culture, especially when he recently said that Korea and the United States are not our main enemies, but that war is our main enemy, but that Korean culture is a reactionary culture. I'd like to say how culture changes people and how it itself can destroy the interior of North Korea, which is scarier than the scariest real nuclear weapons."

이현승 씨는 북한 주민이 한국의 문화 콘텐츠를 따라가는 속도가 거의 동시에 이뤄진다고 말합니다.
Lee Hyun-seung says that North Koreans follow Korean cultural content almost at the same time.

[녹취: 이현승] ”한국 드라마 ‘거침없이 하이킥’이라고 이 드라마가 제가 알기로는 방영이 끝난 게 두 달 전인가 그런데 두 달 밖에 종영된 지 두 달밖에 안 된다. 특히 가져오는 라인이 있다고 말하더라고요."
[Recording: Lee Hyun-seung] "As far as I know, the Korean drama 'High Kick' was aired two months ago, but it has only been two months since it ended." I heard that there's a line that you bring in particularly.“

최근 한국의 한 TV 채널에 출연한 탈북 남성은 북한 내 한류가 최근 유행과 함께 간다고 말했습니다.
A North Korean defector who recently appeared on a South Korean TV channel said the Korean Wave in North Korea is going with the recent trend.

북한 청년들은 방탄소년단 BTS를 방탄베낭이라고 부른다며 북한의 열병식에 군인들이 메고 나오는 “방탄배낭을 메봤냐?”는 질문은 BTS를 아는지를 뜻한다고 설명했습니다.
Young North Koreans called BTS BTS BTS and explained that the question of "Have you worn a bulletproof backpack?" carried by soldiers at the North Korean military parade means whether they know BTS.

특히 영상과 음악 등 한류에 영향받는 청년들은 솜뭉치에 물이 흡수되는 것처럼 한국의 문화를 학습하게 되고 이는 세뇌교육의 붕괴로 이어질 것이라고 박지현 대표는 설명합니다.
CEO Park Ji-hyun explains that young people affected by the Korean Wave, such as video and music, will learn Korean culture just as water is absorbed by cotton balls, which will lead to the collapse of brainwashing education.

이런 가운데 탈북민들은 한국의 문화 콘텐츠의 세계적인 유행인 한류에 대한 자부심을 느끼고 있습니다.
In the midst of this, North Korean defectors are proud of the Korean Wave, a global trend of Korean cultural content.

박지현 씨는 자신에게 한류는 한국전쟁으로 분단된 남과 북의 차이를 안고 있는 국가 가치라며, 전쟁 후 한국은 자유민주주의로 건강한 발전을 이뤘으며 이를 자랑스럽게 여긴다고 말했습니다.
Park Ji-hyun said to herself that the Korean Wave is a national value that has a difference between the two Koreas divided by the Korean War, and after the war, Korea has achieved healthy development with liberal democracy and is proud of it.

이현승 씨는 미국의 프로 농구단 LA 레이커스가 한국의 식품 브랜드 ‘비비고’ 로고가 찍힌 유니폼을 입고 뛰는 것을 보고 한류를 실감했다며, 북한 주민들에게 한류뿐 아니라 한류 열풍을 알려야 한다고 강조합니다.
Lee Hyun-seung emphasizes that he realized the Korean Wave when he saw the U.S. professional basketball team LA Lakers running in a uniform with the logo of the Korean food brand Bibigo, and that he should inform North Koreans of the Korean Wave as well as the Korean Wave.

[녹취: 이현승] ”아무리 적대관계에 있고 한류를 막아도 조선 사람이라는 마인드를 가진 북한 사람들이 많습니다. 한류를 접하고 체육경기에 나가도 당연히 북한을 응원하고 북한이 없으면 한국을 응원하는 사람이 많습니다. 제가 볼 때는 DNA가 작용한다고 봅니다. 이런 부분을 알려야 한다고 봅니다. 블랙핑크, BTS가 왜 이렇게 인기가 많은지, 오징어 게임은 왜 이렇게 인기가 많은지, 이런 뉴스가 북한 사람에게 와닿게 되면 북한 사람도 자긍심을 갖고, 왜 이런 한류를 북한 정권이 못 보게 하는지, 그러면 북한 정권에 대해서 인식을 다르게 할 수 있는 것이죠..”
[Recording: Lee Hyun-seung] "No matter how hostile you are and how much you block the Korean Wave, there are many North Koreans with the mindset of Joseon people. Even if you encounter the Korean Wave and go to sports games, of course, there are many people cheering for North Korea and cheering for South Korea without North Korea. I think DNA works. I think we need to let them know this part. "If BLACKPINK and BTS are so popular, why squid games are so popular, if this news hits North Koreans, North Koreans will be proud, why the North Korean regime won't let them see the Korean Wave, then they can change their perception of the North Korean regime."
