미국의 주요 언론매체가 철거 위기에 놓인 북한 금강산 해금강호텔의 사연을 집중 조명했습니다. 남북교류의 중추적 역할을 했던 금강산 관광시설인 이 호텔이 남북관계의 한 단면을 보여준다는 겁니다. 이조은 기자가 보도합니다.
Major U.S. media outlets have highlighted the story of the Haegeumgang Hotel in Geumgangsan Mountain, North Korea, which is on the verge of demolition. The hotel, a tourist facility in Geumgangsan Mountain that played a pivotal role in inter-Korean exchanges, shows a cross-section of inter-Korean relations. Reporter Lee Joeun reports.

미국 ‘CNN’ 방송은 11일, ‘북한에서 녹이 슬어가는 해상 호텔’이란 제목의 보도에서 북한 금강산 해안가에 떠 있는 해금강호텔에 주목했습니다.
The U.S. broadcast "CNN" paid attention to the Haegeumgang Hotel floating on the coast of Geumgangsan Mountain in North Korea on the 11th in a report titled "Rusting Maritime Hotel in North Korea."

이 방송은 해금강호텔이 한때 호주 해안에 떠 있던 전례 없는 호화 호텔이었지만 현재는 남북한을 가르는 제한구역인 비무장지대(DMZ)에서 차로 20분 거리에 있는 북한 측 항구에 황폐하게 자리 잡고 있다고 보도했습니다.
The broadcast reported that the Haegeumgang Hotel was once an unprecedented luxury hotel floating on the coast of Australia, but is now in ruins in North Korea's port, a 20-minute drive from the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), a restricted area that separates the two Koreas.

이 호텔은 약 30년 전 화려하게 시작됐지만, 1만 마일의 기이한 여정의 마지막 정거장에서 비극으로 끝날 위기에 놓였다는 겁니다.
The hotel started splendidly about 30 years ago, but it is on the verge of ending in tragedy at the last stop of a strange 10,000 miles journey.

이 호텔은 호주의 개발업자가 당시 돈으로 약 4천500만 달러를 들여 7층 구조물로 건조해 세계적으로 유명한 호주의 산호초 천국인 ‘그레이트 배리어 리프’ 해상에 띄운 세계 최초의 해상 호텔입니다.
This hotel is the world's first maritime hotel in which an Australian developer spent about $45 million at the time to build it into a seven-story structure and float on the sea of Great Barrier Reef, a world-famous Australian coral reef paradise.

호주에서는 ‘포 시즌스 배리어 리프’라는 이름으로 1988년 3월 문을 열었습니다.
It opened in Australia in March 1988 under the name of Four Seasons Barrier Leaf.

그러나 악천후로 바다가 통제불능 상태로 흔들리는 상황이 잦았고 손님이 줄어들기 시작하면서 호텔은 운영 비용을 감당할 수 없어 1년을 버티지 못하고 문을 닫았습니다.
However, due to bad weather, the sea often shook out of control, and as the number of customers began to decrease, the hotel could not afford the operating costs and closed for a year.

이후 1989년 이 호텔은 베트남에 팔려 ‘사이공호텔’로 이름을 바꿨지만 거의 10년 동안 사이공강에 정박해 있었고, 결국 재정이 고갈돼 8년 만인 1989년 또 문을 닫았습니다.
Since then, in 1989, the hotel was sold to Vietnam and renamed Saigon Hotel, but it has been anchored in Saigon River for almost 10 years, and eventually closed again in 1989, eight years after its financial exhaustion.

‘CNN’ 방송은 그러나 한국과의 접경 지역인 금강산으로 관광객을 유치하기 위해 북한이 이 호텔을 매입하며 새로운 삶의 터전을 찾았다고 보도했습니다.
However, the broadcaster reported that North Korea has found a new place to live by purchasing the hotel to attract tourists to Geumgangsan Mountain, the border area with South Korea.

이 호텔은 북한에서 해금강호텔이라는 새로운 이름으로 세 번째 모험을 준비해 2000년 10월 문을 열었고, 한국 기업인 현대아산이 금강산 지역의 다른 시설도 운영하며 이 호텔을 관리하게 됐다는 겁니다.
The hotel opened in October 2000 in preparation for its third adventure under the new name Haegeumgang Hotel in North Korea, and Hyundai Asan, a South Korean company, also operated other facilities in the Geumgangsan Mountain area to manage the hotel.

다만, 한국 언론 보도들에 따르면 해금강호텔은 현대아산이 소유하고 직영했던 것으로 알려졌습니다.
However, according to Korean media reports, the Haegeumgang Hotel was owned and directly managed by Hyundai Asan.

‘CNN’ 방송은 현대아산 박성욱 대변인을 인용해 “금강산 관광은 남북 분단의 아픔을 달래기 위해 이산가족 상봉의 거점으로서 남북 화해를 제고하고 남북교류의 중추적 역할을 했다”고 전했습니다.
Citing Hyundai Asan spokesman Park Sung-wook, the broadcaster said, "Geumgangsan Mountain tourism played a pivotal role in enhancing inter-Korean reconciliation and inter-Korean exchanges as a base for reunions of separated families."

하지만 2008년 한국인 관광객 박왕자 씨가 북한 군인의 총에 맞아 숨지자 한국 정부는 금강산 관광을 중단했고, 해금강호텔도 관광 투어를 중단했습니다.
However, when South Korean tourist Park Wang-ja was shot and killed by a North Korean soldier in 2008, the South Korean government stopped sightseeing at Geumgangsan Mountain, and the Haegeumgang Hotel also stopped sightseeing.

‘CNN’ 방송은 이후 이 호텔이 계속 운영됐는지 여부는 확실하지 않지만 여전히 금강산 일대 부두에 정박해 녹이 슬어 가는 모습은 볼 수 있다고 보도했습니다.
The broadcast reported that it is not clear whether the hotel has continued to operate since then, but you can still see rusting by anchoring at a pier around Geumgangsan Mountain.

그러면서, 최근 김정은 국무위원장의 지시로 철거가 임박해 불확실한 미래에 직면했다고 밝혔습니다.
He said he faced an uncertain future due to the imminent demolition under the direction of State Council Chairman Kim Jong-un.

미-북 비핵화 협상 교착 상태가 이어지는 가운데, 해빙됐던 남북관계가 다시 얼어붙었던 2019년 10월 김정은 위원장이 금강산 관광지구를 찾아 “남측 시설물들을 싹 들어내고 독자적으로 개발하라”고 지시했기 때문입니다.
This is because in October 2019, when thawed inter-Korean relations were frozen again amid a deadlock in denuclearization negotiations between the U.S. and North Korea, Chairman Kim Jong-un visited the Geumgangsan Mountain tourist zone and ordered "Remove all South Korean facilities and develop them independently."

김 위원장은 지난 1월 8차 당 대회에서는 독자적인 금강산 개발 계획을 밝혔고, 한국이 운영하던 시설들은 “모두 들어낼 것”을 강조하기도 했습니다.
Chairman Kim announced his own plan to develop Geumgangsan Mountain at the 8th party conference in January, and stressed that all facilities operated by Korea would be "released."

‘CNN’ 방송은 이런 와중에 신종 코로나바이러스 사태가 터지며 북한의 금강산 관광지구 재설계 계획은 보류됐고, 해당 시설 철거 계획의 지속 여부는 확실하지 않다고 전했습니다.
The broadcaster said that North Korea's redesign plan for the Geumgangsan Tourist Zone has been put on hold due to the outbreak of the new coronavirus, and it is not clear whether the facility demolition plan will continue.

그러면서, 해금강호텔은 그 사이 “또 다른 하루를 살고 있고 과거의 유산은 여전히 살아있다”고 보도했습니다.
In the meantime, the Haegeumgang Hotel reported, "I'm living another day and my past legacy is still alive."
